I don't know how I've dodged two bullets in a week, but I sure am glad! Last time, the place I buy tires for the car was hit directly, and the garage I park in at work was flooded and no one could leave while I was in Murfreeboro at school. Today, I've listened to sirens for hours, gone into the basement of the hospital, and watched in horor as the city where I attend school was hit hard, all of it live. I saw the funnel cloud as it formed over I-24. Nashville's search and rescue has headed to Murfreesboro to lend a hand; two death so far. 24 hours earlier and I would've been there, probably still trying to get home since there is no power, thus no traffic lights. Sheesh! But I'll take my luck.

Robin, I was worried about you!
We are okay, had to take cover in the hall
but we didn't have anything like what we expected.
It sort of split and went north and south of us.
The folks over in Elijay are under the gun now.

Michael, how about you?

They passed through here about noon to two-ish. There were several radar indicated tornadoes and one tornado seen by a spotter traveling along highway 157. They hit harder just east of here around Huntsville and Scottsboro.

The sky is mostly clear now, but there is still a lot of energy in the atmosphere.

GT gets huge in NorCal, if that's where you are, guessing from Sunset Zone 15 designation. Easily 10ft tall, and you could train it laterally like a climber to cover nearly as wide. I would think 3 or 4 plants for a 16ft line would be plenty. Let it grow for a couple-three years, and then start training the long canes to the sides like you would for any other climbing rose. When GT first came out people were trying to grow it as a hybrid tea and were PO'd that it wouldn't stay in bounds or bloom much that way. I had one client in Atherton insist that I keep her GT down to 4ft tall and then was ticked when it kept shooting upwards instead of blooming. Obviously I just didn't know what I was doing! the label says it's only 3ft tall! No, you have to treat it like a climber, or a big arching shrub! and then it's happy, and unbeatable.

Back to the original question about letting house wrens nest. For the last few years, house wrens have tried to kill day old chicks (bluebird, titmouse, carolina wren) and ready-to-hatch eggs. I have video to show you how fast and awful they are...the videos are below. They also will peck eggs of other birds and throw them out of the nest boxes and take over the box. You do NOT want house wrens...you CAN discourage them even if you can't legally do more than that. Check out these videos: Bet posted this one for me: House Wren throws chicks out of nest The next day, the house wren threw a few of them out of the box again but I was able to get them and put them back in the box. Here's Bet's video of a house wren destroying eggs: House Wren destroys eggs I don't have video of two other instances: one where I found 6 ready-to-hatch titmice eggs on the ground by the box in the short time it took me to get to the box. I put 2 eggs back in that hadn't been as badly harmed. Only one titmouse lived and when that chick was about 15 days old, a house wren came into the box and attacked the chick!!! Last year, I found 6 just hatched chickadees at the foot of the box but I could only find 5 of the chicks. I put them back, put a wren guard on and they survived. On Fox News just now they said 12 dead in Picher OK and they are still searching. How sad for those folks. I believe the government had been trying to buy out the residents for years, but most had been reluctant to leave for various reasons. From Wiki: Picher has become notable because it is located very near the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Tar Creek Superfund site. The site was contaminated decades ago from underground lead and zinc mining. Chat piles left behind by the mining companies have lead dust that has blown around the town. Elevated lead levels in Picher children have led to learning disabilities and other problems. The lead and zinc have also seeped into groundwater, ponds, and lakes, many of which still have children swimming in them. The children of Picher have been found to have toxic levels of lead in their bodies, the EPA has since declared Picher to be one of the most toxic areas in the United States.

Weeeeeell.....everyone wants under cabinet lights so their kitchens "glow". :0) This is an easy fix for one of the remodels I did not put under cab lights in. Also a lot of my houses have switched outlets. So when a house is empty of renters you can't walk in and turn on a light and with ALL the curtains closed for instance, it's dark enough for these to be on. So I ordered 7. I'll spread them around and they'll look cute. The advantage of using one of these is: you don't take up the outlet with a night light or a USB plug.

All that mess passed through northeast Mississippi on its way. We had lots of high wind whipping around and rearranging everything outside, but the sun kept shining, while our local tv station got so much hail we could hear it over the weathermen's talking... I was so tired of all that purple and red on the screen. Very scary. One highway patrolman said it "came out of nowhere" and blew his car around. And tonight there were the Atlanta Braves out in the rain playing baseball! I don't know if the game ever resumed or not.

Glad those of you in the path were safe.

Sheesh, you guys! The threat of earthquakes are nothing, absolutely nothing, compared to what you folks face with your tornadoes! I would be a nervous wreck living in your area...heck, I'm nervous for you right now. Criminy! I pray for your safety!

Glad that everybody still seems to be ok. We lucked out too, tornado stayed south and the hail went north, but my son said his work vehicle got a few dents, his private car on the other side of the building was ok, a difference of about 50 yards.
Today it looks like Easter but we got a cold wind.

The picures of the destruction are horrific; even more so are the deaths which resulted from the tornadoes. My prayers and sympathy go to everyone who lives in that area--and gosh, it's so wide-spread, they can--and do--hit anywhere!
