Flower spike on a flower spike

I have a Phalaenopsis that has a flower spike extending out of another flower spike; like a branch extending from the trunk of the tree. I noticed it growing weeks ago and decided to let it grow and see what happens. The spike developed many buds, but remained smaller than the main spike from which it was protruding. After the buds on the main spike began to open, the buds on the secondary spike began to blast one by one. Now there is only one bud left on that spike but it appears it will make it. The blasting doesnt seem to have affected the other spike in any way as it is healthy with 12 blooms and counting.

I was wondering if in the future I should cut off any secondary spikes that appear? Also, I was wondering if this side spike simply diverts nutrients from the main spike leading to diminished bloom production on the main spike? Finally, out of curiosity, does anyone know why my phal produced the secondary spike to being with?

Thanks
