Any recipes for seaweed emulsion using dried seaweed?

I don't live near the coast and I am very unwilling to go through the hassle of LA traffic and parking to get seaweed. I have heard and read about the benefits of seaweed/kelp emulsion and want to make some for my tomato plants. I can't find any recipes on the net that use dried seaweed. Has anyone made it from dried seaweed? Is there a specific type of seaweed I should get? The most common I found in the Asian stores is wakame, kombu, and laver.

While your at the Asian market get some sashimi and make some homemade fish emulsion, I heard it is good for vegetables too.

Couldn't I just buy whatever fish is on sale or the entrails (free)from the seafood area instead of high priced sashimi-grade fish?

Foliar feeding of the FE/SW would be one excellent way around the settling in the bottom issue. Weekly or at most bi-weekly should keep most of your plants thriving. From using seaweed over 20 years now (liquid form) I can see adding it to the resevoir sporadically should pose no problems. I agree the fish emulsion would settle and be a problem except maybe during the 2 a day fillings which should agitate and help keep more of it in solution form. Just a few thoughts. Don't forget to consider the calcium for BER problems and consider dolomite or gypsum mixed in the media before planting will help minimize some part of this problem. How to deal with feeding after fruit or veg is getting ready to harvest is a more a challenge I suspect. I don't care for fishy maters and so foliar at that point becomes problematic. Maybe this is where adding to resevoir makes more sense because the plants uptake will mean more frequent filling and more of the FE and SW kept in solution. Human urine is more comparable to chemical fertilizers which contain Urea. Urine can contain extremely high dosages of nitrogen, or very little it's not static at all. Best to dilute it. Other things can be excreted through urine, which could be harmful to plants but it doesn't mean the plants themselves will utilize such things. even if the plants did utilize let's say some form of medication passed through the urine, it doesn't mean you would be consuming the medication again when you go to eat the harvested plant matter. To me it's organic, some could argue that taking medications that aren't organic could pass through urine, and then be consumed by the plants and that it's not natural, I could argue that wildlife eat certain plants and fungi that are medicinal/poisonous that pass through urine and excrement and there for it's organic. Not sure where one draws the line. Nitrogen is Nitrogen to a plant, it doesn't really care which source it comes from but I wouldn't use urine simply because of the smell and there's better and cheaper ways of obtaining Nitrogen rather then saving up pee. Besides, it's bothersome, it would be like using water soluble MG every time you go to water which isn't very efficient for the grower.

How long would a dustbin sized fermentaion take in cold weather? Possibly forever. The idea of these gardening teas is to wash the microbes off of the compost and feed them in a warm environment to multiply them by 1000x. I have put in fresh seaweed, rotton tomatoes, some grass clippings, few handfulls of chicken manure pellets, a bucketful of worm casts, urine, a couple of whole oily fish cubed, and about 300g of molasses raw sugar and a small air pump and sir stone, and filled the whole thing up with water until about 3 inches from the top. A 30-gallon tank could use as much air as you can get. When the bacteria and fungi start to multiply, all their offspring need air too. It is not very hard to run out of oxygen. It's quite a thick mixture, and fairly difficult to stir, if this makes any difference to fermentation, i don't know? Something's wrong. It should not be thick. The thing is, it's quite cold here in Britain (Kent, England) at the moment, only around 10C or so. I'm guessing this would slow down the microorganisms and make the whole process last a long time? That is a problem. 10C is a bare minimum where the microbes start to come alive. Even warming it up by 5 degrees would really help. I've had this going for about 5 days now, and it doesn't look as though any of the solid matter is breaking down at all. If you get it just a little warmer, 24 hours should be the maximum time to leave it. Longer and you will lose oxygen and kill the beneficial microbes. Is the idea to wait until all or most of the solids are turned to a liquid mush? You know, rotted out more or less completely? I've never seen this before. Again, the idea is to wash off the microbes. Once that's done, you can remove the compost solids and put them back into your compost bin. New to all this organic growing, but very keen to learn. Sorry I assumed you were in the US. Now I see you are in Malaysia. In that case I would crush the dry seaweed into dust, soak it in water, and apply immediately. I think you are trying to make a tea out of it. You can try it both ways, but I think the fastest way will be the best way.

Sorry Admiral, just messing with you. It would be absurd to use food grade anything in your garden...including seaweed. Input costs should not exceed returns in my opinion. While seaweed and kelp might be good for your garden, it is not practical unless you live by the ocean. Look for a local organic material to incorporate in your soil...gotta be something. Look on farm and garden section of Craigslist to start.

You can't just go grab kelp, you have to contact the lifeguards in that area and many will turn you down. Even after you haul it home, you have to wash it, grind/chop it fine, and composting it with o.m. is better than emuslifying it anyway. Just buy emulsion, I'm at the beach twice a week and I still do.

I've already incorporated composted manure and yard trimmings along with composted green waste from the kitchen. I am looking to make a small batch of seaweed emulsion to try it out on a few tomato plants.

I'm trying to make tea out of dried seaweed. About 1-2 cups in a gallon of water with a tablespoon of molasses and a little fish emulsion. I figure the kelp emulsion is mostly water so hopefully this will work, one pound of seaweed was less than a quart of kelp emulsion.

dicot, you ought to move to Maine. Here we can bring home 50 lbs. of growing seaweed a day or all the washed up (dying) seaweed you can haul. And we don't have to wash or grind our seaweed. We just put it straight from the beach onto our gardens.

Dried seaweed meant for human consumption costs several dollars for a few ounces in the Asian markets. It would be ridiculously expensive to try to use that. Plus some of it is salted.

annpat- How do you put the seaweed straight in your garden? I live on the water and keep looking at all the great green product in the ocean and wonder just what I need to do with it. I also would like to make homemade kelp emultion, but if all I have to do is bury the stuff please tell?????????????

I think annpat uses it as a mulch so she just spreads it around on top of her soil

Hello all:

I wish someone would answer the question rather than judging its cost-effectiveness. I have several kinds of leftover dried seaweed that I'm never, ever going to use for anything else (my husband hates it and I hate cooking for just myself). I would love to use it for my garden.

Any recipes for seaweed emulsion using dried seaweed?
