Name That Plant!

This plant came from poppy seeds?

I had a dried poppy pod with a zillion seeds in it and prepared some areas to sow them. When the seeds sprouted I've been diligent in weeding out other things.

I've never grown poppies but kept hearing descriptions like "lettuce" or "cabbage" associated with their appearance. These plants are a couple months or more in growth and show no signs of looking like lettuce or cabbage.

It is very disappointing to now know I've been nurturing something other than poppies and it's also a fantastic mystery how and why these plants came from the seeds I took directly out of the poppy pod. I bought the pod from a dried flower dealer and it seems unlikely that someone took the real seeds out and put something else in, but I can think of no other explanation of how these plants sprouted from the seeds I sowed.

I'm coming to terms with the realization that these plants are not poppies, nor will they ever be poppies, but just what are they? Anybody know?

Might be a creeping knotweed.

There are some types of peach that have red leaves, and yours does look like a peach, possibly with a bit of leaf curl disease.

At least online, just like all the others that have pink poppies. Swallowtail Garden Seeds does not have Linum lewisii. To give them the benefit of the doubt they may be calling it ''common flax''. Their pink poppies are in a mixture, not sold separately. Since pink poppies are fairly common and Linum lewisii is fairly common it is curious that it is difficult to find both.

The "carnation poppies" or "peony-flowered poppies" (don't ask for the botanical name, because then we get into all kinds of err issues here) should do well in Ohio. I was given some seed by fellow gardeners in Kansas, and I just hurled it all over the place. The result was that my flower beds all had beautiful red, fully double poppies in between the perennials and roses. I loved it. Oriental poppies were also excellent doers for me in the Midwest. Icelandic poppies didn't work well for me there--it was too hot and too humid. Also, forget about trying Meconopsis spp., and Shirley/Flanders poppies are kinda iffy. I never tried California Poppies (Escholtzia spp.) in Kansas, but I suspect it's too humid and too cold in winter for them.

Looks like knotweed, but it somehow sprung up from poppy seeds sown not only on the ground cleared for a bed, but also in a germinating tray. The same thing came up from poppy seeds taken from a dried poppy pod! I'm utterly mystified how this has happened.

I'm including another picture if this forum gives me the option.

Looks like the forum doesn't. I haven't been on Gardenweb in quite a while . . . I don't like the changes I see. It seems a lot more awkward to use and more difficult to find things.

I guess I have to make a new post to leave another picture.

Some weed seeds are so tiny and they remain viable for such a long time, they can get blown in on the wind, dropped by birds, mixed into non-sterile garden mix, transported by mistaken when you are handling other stuff.

That's how nature intends to spread 'em - unfortunately not always the ones we want. Nothing sinister.

Enjoy your poppies! Any nurturing is an experience.
