I agree with Phacelia, known to some as "scorpion weed", but a nice native plant.

It has distinctive aromatic foliage. Because they are biennials, the plants die off after setting seed. While removing them, I noticed the odd smell which reminds me of curry mixed with coffee grounds.

Thanks, everyone! This plant has been a mystery to me since we moved to this spot 4 years ago. It appears to love this side of the mountain (east side) and is growing in 3 ft diameter clumps with a very prolific show of flowers. Quite the display for spring! I just wish it would last a bit longer in the season.
