Japanese ornamental cherries may occasionally fruit, in some situations. I have gotten the opportunity to taste one of these fruits when they are fully ripe. When fully ripe they are very dark and have a very dark scarlet juice that stains. The fruits can be pretty juicy, but the fruits are pretty small and don't have much edible flesh, a very small flesh to seed ratio. The taste has a lot of bitterness and are not very sweet. The first thing that hits you is the bitterness, but after that there's an aftertaste of intense cherry cough syrup, which is a little stronger tasting than regular sweet cherries. It almost makes me think these could be used for culinary flavoring, but you'd have to want bitterness too (like in certain alcoholic cocktail drinks). Might not be a good idea to eat too many though. The most common Japanese ornamental cherry variety, Yoshino, is a very poor pollinator, so usually cannot pollinate itself, which means no cherries. Kwanzan is a sterile variety, cannot produce fruit, and the others require a different cherry variety (any species) to pollinate it if any fruit is to form.

these trees are now 7 years old. one has barely grown. because of saturated ground this spring one of the bigger trees fell over. I could have propped it back up but instead I let it die. in seven years I've seen about 20 blossoms & 6 cherries. these trees are kindling. I might try 2 new cherry trees from a nursery. i've heard not all cherry trees do well in this area. there's a starks about an hour from here. they should stock something that will do well here. the other 4 trees will replaced by apples & pears. as far as pollination these trees are within 25' of 12 bee hives. on another note it was looking like I'd be having a bumper crop of peaches. the trees so laden I was planning building props to hold up the limbs. well with record spring rains all the trees came down with brown rot. I did not get 1 friggin' peach.

A plant that gets full sun all morning but is shaded in the afternoon has a much different growing environment from one shielded from the sun in the morning but exposed to full sun in the afternoon."

Those are leaf buds - pears bloom before the leaves expand. And if the trees are young and small you won't get a lot of fruit off of them anyway. In fact it would probably be a good idea to snip off any fruits you see starting to form until the trees have sized up well. Instead of having energy that would otherwise go into development of the top go into early in life fruit production.
