Cover crops in cold Canada

Question for the northern organic and bio intensive gardeners out there:

I am new to organic vegetable gardening but very keen and willing to learn. I am interest in the concept of using nitrogen fixing cover crops for green manure and minimizing outside inputs to my garden this way. I already have two large DYI compost bins that are working very well, and would work for this.

The issue is that I have a smallish yard that is basically entirely occupied by three 5 x 20 vegetable beds, potted plants and a few small raised beds. All beds are new and being used to grow veggies. I see that people in warmer zones use cover crops during the winter, but that's not possible here: nothing will grow in the winter and I don't want to waste our short growing season and my precious beds. So how to fellow Canadians or other cold winter gardeners do this?

I do have a front yard that is unused and I hate mowing lawn. I'm thinking of sowing wild flower seeds mixed with alfalfa and let it grow wild. Would this work as green manure?
