Making a Gardening App. A question...

I'm a developer, and a gardener, so I figured I should combine my hobbies for a moment and make a (drumroll...) garden calander app.

It'll run on Windows, Mac, Linux, and eventually, Android.

But I want this to be useful for everyone, not just me. So...

What would you like it to do?

I'm not sure I catch your drift. Do you mean it would remind people when to plant, prune, etc? Or tell them in which zones the plant they're looking at would survive, or if it is perennial/annual/biennial?

If you write a garden app don't forget the iPad. That's what I use. I use both "free" and I also buy apps.
"But I want this to be useful for everyone, not just me."
Make the app both local and universal.
I live in Silicon Valley, Ca. I want a simple calendar that lists the last frost dates. The best buys for plants, seeds and bulbs for my area and a way to compare the cost of buying over the net including S&H, or driving to a local nursery, spending money on gas. Get data for all climate zones.That's just the beginning.

BTW, if you write for the computer, as you mentioned, and you want to transfer it to an app for other media, write it that way.

I have not read any messages above I use a 6" low Azalia clay pot. I set 5 plants that go together (sun) or (shade) in the pot to see how they look togeter and placement, I carefully take them out of their pot one at a time and set them in the bowl and fill with fresh mix. Then I tap the bowl down on my potting bench to set the soil or use the rounded end of a pencil and poke the soil in and then tap down again. I put my rocks for decoration in and then add my top dressing. I wait a week before I water in becauase I want any broken roots to heal over. Try to select plants that are interesting and small growing, plants that all can take the cold or a group that must have shelter in the winter, do not mix them. Dry plants, cactus, certain Crassula will go together with cactus Then select plants that will love low light and a little more water, making sure all plants grow the same time of the year, Adromischus, Crassula, Haworthia, Aeonium, Pelargonium, Gasteria all are winter growers, this is just an example. Select plants that flower a different time, or some are round in shape, differnt leaf forms, foliage color. etc. this will make a more interesting garden, add some larger rocks to fill in spaces that have good color then add the gravel (ground cover) don't let it get too busy, this if for the plants to show off, and its not a rock show. I like the idea of a garden app that helps with design, reminds of maintenance and suggests plants as well as planting time, but I think finding one that adequately does all this is a long time coming. There are just so many variables that can change garden suggestions or maintenance for any one app to be of use for everyone. I think UF learned this when they launched their own garden app. The concept of their app was great, but I think the reality of building location-specific database turned out to be too large of a job as they haven't updated the app since it was released (I think, I will have to double check to make sure.) Apps like the ones from Burpee or MG are often generalized for Temperate gardening, which describes most of the US. But for subtropic gardening, the information seemed lacking or, in some cases, wrong.

Do you mean store specific? Or that has icons for all the items? If you just mean written lists, any app that allows you to have several lists open at once would work, even the built in Notes app (that's what I mostly use). In Notes, create a note for each store and select that note to add an item to the list. If you want something of the sort, but more powerful, look under Productivity and Organization. Maybe something like Listaway or Evernote. The basic Reminders app lets you share your lists through the cloud. If you want to share lists with a partner, AnyList is a good choice. I'm pretty sure it allows multiple lists, but I think you could also use customized subheaders for the different stores. I haven't looked at it recently. It has organization by department within a list, with autofile, and does some high level tricks like recipe import. "Groceries" app is a little clunkier, but for sure does multiple lists, and has autofile and autocomplete, but I don't know if those will work on the hardware, et al. Pushpins includes offers from major stores. I used to have a great app for this that was for entertaining, but I can't remember the name, and I don't have my phone to look it up. There are errands managers. Errands To-Do List would work, but I think it's clunky, and I'd rather just use Notes, but it's the best one I've seen in this category. Some of the above also let you scan bar codes, but I find spelling it out is easier. I got Amazon Echo when it was first out to see if my folks would like it. It's not all that useful, really, but what I like enough to keep using it is that it has a shopping list function. You can be up to your elbows cooking, and tell it to put something on the shopping list. The list can be accessed from your phone or tablet (Fire or Apple, I think). It's just one list, but like having a kid around to write it down. :) It will also read back the list. :)

How many other apps for gardening are available? What are their best/worst features, or maybe most/least used?

I went through a spell of trying out various garden design programs (let's not get into the cost, but it was considerable). After a couple years and twelve different programs, I ended up using what I found to be the most realistic and flexible design aids: a date book to track "when" and graph paper to track "where", and a list of websites to help guess maturity sizes and appropriate cultivation.

I love my iPhone and iPad. I've tried just about all the gardening apps out there. Some are really good. My current favorite one is a free one call Plant Pictures. It's simple, but handy - and I think that's the key to making a good app. My advice: download/purchase every gardening app you find and write down the pros/cons of each and go from there.
