Perhaps the vine is Echinocystis lobata. The seedlings look like a Prunus but it could certainly be a Red tip (Photinia).

Esh, I do love it when you tell me if, in your opinion, they're keepers. I'll do some web surfing based on your input.

Appears you have taken on a tough, yet much needed job.
I commend you for you efforts and to make your job a little easier, a suggestion.

Don't be afraid to use some herbicide/brush killer.
Mix as directed+ , and put it in a squeeze bottle that you can get drops from. Cut the vines, trunks etc leaving 4-5 inches above ground and put enough drops to coat the cut and slightly run down the stump. Apply it immediately after making the cut. Kill the roots without collateral damage. Don't kill yourself over there!

I would not keep the vine, although I'll admit it is a native plant. As to the seedlings, I'd pot them up and decide later.

I do love that you keep finding things. A fun project, to be sure.

Why do you want to eliminate the muscadines?

Ronkw, thank you. I told the boss the other day that I needed some help and he suggested we try chemicals. I appreciate you telling me how to do it. I'm not working with a small area and would not have known what type of application would be the most effective. Your method will really help with getting rid of the biggest problems, specifically, the wisteria and muscadine vines. I absolutely hate using chemicals but sometimes you've got to do what's best for the greater good. Thank you so much.

Destin_gardener, my uncle has a long row of muscadines of various types on a fence in middle GA. We enjoy eating them every year. However, the muscadines in the woods across the street seem to overtake the trees and everything else in their path. Some of the vines are enormous and completely cover the smaller trees in the woods. I've cut some vines that were over an inch thick. Between the muscadines and wisteria, a lot of trees have died. The vine just smothers them.

Perhaps I should post a picture of these vines to make sure they're muscadines. Whatever they are, I put them in the same category (almost) with wisteria.

These vines have been left to grow where ever on what ever for as long as I've been here (15 years) and are just out of control.

If I'm doing the wrong thing by trying to cut out these vines, I'd be more than happy to be corrected. I'm just trying to save the trees that feed the birds and are host plants for many butterflies in our area.

Let me know if I've got this plant all wrong.

Esh, I did some research after your post on the Echinocystis lobata. It didn't take me long to realize that the vine wasn't a prize find. You know, until today, I didn't know we had wild cucumbers. Go figure! Anyway, this has been a learning experience and so much fun. Now, the boss has taken an interest and is asking me questions about the plants and trees in the woods. He's really interested in what's out there that we can eat in case our economy completely goes belly up. You'd have to know the boss to get the full measure of that comment. LOL!

Definitely black cherry seedlings. And although they do make nice trees when large, and are native, they create so many seedlings that they're just not worth the trouble. And I do mean way too many seedlings.

I really think the leaf is too glossy for black cherry. Red tip seems more likely to me at this point.

It looks to me as if your vine might be passiflora lutea. The leaf shape seems to be quite variable -- sometimes pointier, sometimes quite rounded; in most pics, the leaves are less-deeply lobed than in your photo.

I have Passiflora lutea and I don't think that is it, but you can watch for the nickel-sized pale yellow flowers later as I'm sure you won't clear all this out at once. P. lutea is itself a fairly aggressive vine for being such a little guy. Also, if you see Gulf Fritillary caterpillars on it later in the year, that would mean passiflora. I have it on the shrubs in my front yard and it gets so thick that it weighs them down and I yank a bunch off mid-summer and let it start again. Comes back from underground roots. The tiny maypops turn blue-black when they are ripe.

Bon, in the second picture, the stem is quite hairy; does that stem go with the leaf or was it from another plant that was entangled?
