Clo x Ctsm question

This plant still has four green leaves. I've been watering it slightly during the past six weeks. Now there are two spikes (I think...isn't it too early for new growths?) started and I don't want to do anything wrong. I'm really anxious to see this plant bloom. Do I keep on with the occasional watering? stop altogether? remove the leaves? If I keep watering, do I need to also feed? I use rainwater, so no nutrients that I'd have with well water.

I have another plant, a Ctsm Donna Wise cross that is also starting a spike. This plant doesn't have any leaves & I've left it bone dry. These plants will be the first of this alliance that I've brought to bloom. Any help will be appreciated.

Can't really tell what is doing with your plant, Sheila. I have had two Clowesetums for a number of years. One puts out new growth in April, one in June, both spike in late Aug, early Sept, and bloom during the fall. But years ago I had a Clowesetum White Magic which started its new growth in October and bloomed in May. So, it really depends on the plant's parentage and its specific cultural conditions. You have to play it by ear.

As long as my Catasetinae plants have leaves, I continue to water it although lightly if the leaves are not actually growing anymore, and then dry when they drop. I stop feedling when the newest leaf stops growing.

My Ctsm Donna Wise starts new growth each year in January and blooms in the summer, but that may be because of my cooler greenhouse conditions.

Thx CJ. Sounds like my Donna Wise X is a new growth. It's also been very cool here this year. Is there a way to tell growth from spikes when they first emerge?

I bought the Clowesetum from Fred Clarke when he spoke to our OS. He did tell me it was a spring bloomer; so I'm hoping that these are indeed spikes...but on the other hand, they do look identical to the emerging spike/growth on the DWx.

Nora, I just checked my 40 W 48 in bulbs- I seem to have a mix of 'Natural' light, 'Daylight deluxe' (both Philips), and Sylvania cool white. Hard to tell from the bulbs exactly what all 4 are. I think I strive for the closest to daylight/natural light that I can get, but I know that I re-search the forums before I buy each time, to get whatever is considered to be the best color of light. My HD is somewhat limited, so I have bought also from Lowes on the rare occasion that I go there - hence the questionable mix. Well, from what I know, phals, masdies, restrepias, pleuros, zootrophions, lepanthes are all lower light, so fluorescent will work for you. Some Angs are hi light lovers, others tolerate lower light, so look into your specifics. I think cirros will take the lower light, my galeandra baueri blooms wonderfully under fluorescents. I could never get a cochleanthes to bloom (which doesn't mean much) I have a paphinia on it's way to me, so I hope they like fluorescents! And I think stelis is another lower light tolerant plant. Hmmm, perfection gave great advice- utility type fluorescents won't make you completely happy in the end. They're great, but supplement them with some good CFLs. the light they add to a focused area is amazing! Carolyn

RE: acquiring catasetums - one must learn to suck up! I saw a couple of species at a show in one of the local orchid societies' exhibits that enthralled me, found out who they belonged to, stalked him at the next show, chatted casually, pounced, harrassed, whined, etc. Has it worked? Not sure, but we will "swap lists", so there's hope *IF* I have stuff that he might lust after, the planets align, etc. IMO, any catasetum, species or hybrid, is desirable beyond reckoning.
