She had a rich full life

We just got back from New York state from my aunt's burial services. She was 101 years old and passed away in her sleep. At her request, no formal funeral services were held. Just family and friends at the graveside saying goodbye.

She taught swimming until 2 years ago and just 6 months ago finally moved into a home where she could receive some help with mobility. A grand lady, never once heard a complaint from here.

Will miss her letters and calls.

Meyermike, LaQuillo is where I fell in love with Coconut palm trees...I was so impressed on how large and how green the trees were!!! As you know...as the years go by they don't seem to be as lush and green as they were 20+ years ago...probably because they sold the plantation and noone is there to take care of the trees!!! That's a bummer but they still look great to me. My kids love that beach...it's the first place that they had local food cooked by the road in those fryers...where the local ladies slapped the ingredients together with banana leaves...I'm glad that I didn't look to closely in those vats of oil!!! LOL...but it was truly delicious...whatever it was!!! A long time ago when it was a local secret, we found our way to the large waterfall swimming hole...That was so much fun...Now they have the path partly paved and with hand rails at certain spots...That was a little depressing because part of the experience was to see if you could handle the trail and the joy of making it down and to find the falls!!! Not to mention having to climb back up after you swim and dive all day!! I enjoyed hearing the "Coki" frogs while on the climb down to the waterfall...I love El Yunque!!! I hope you are receiving some sunshine up in MA...we just had a great downpour..but it only lasted 15 minutes!! We need more rain here in VA... A job down in Disney sounds like a great idea!!! Maybe Pooh Bear or sleepy could be fun... then you could prop up your feet under a few shady palms and play up the character...sounds like a plan!!! LOL Laura

We BOTH agree, the idea of "staying married for the kids" is one of the cruelest and most self-deceptive things parents can do. Both of us were infinitely relieved when our parents respectively divorced and married people who suited them better. Your kids know there is trouble already. They may not be able to verbalize it and are certainly not old enough to analyze it. But they KNOW there is trouble in Paradise and that there is tension 24/7 in their lives. Children are very sensitive to those kinds of emotional messages; you can't hide from people you are living with day-to-day. If she can't or won't be a good mother, let her go. Maybe she will be able to better express affection for them when it's on her own terms and she isn't feeling pressured by outside expectations. If that means she's a part-time mom, that's not the worst thing in the world for them. Children need to be loved and encouraged. They don't need a fantasy that they're the center of everybody's world, because they aren't. Give them a good life. Give them joy, reassurance that you will be there for them, and a sense of hope. Don't try to give them the "perfect" life, because you can't. No parent can.

Thanks for posting the Holland story, Morz8. I first read it when DGS was diagnosed as a GERD baby. It was a help to me as I was figuring out how to help DS and DIL, who were overwhelmed by the situation at first. Especially as they live out-of-state. It is such a gentle lesson, but difficult - how to accept the unacceptable, and how to adjust gracefully to that which cannot be changed, and how to find the good in what appears so bleak. I haven't checked any boxes because I would have to check all of them. That's how touching these stories are! As Current Resident said, this is the internet at its best. Every person has a story. Even if you think you don't have a story, you do. I agree wholeheartedly that travel to a new place is a great way to challenge oneself, to find even a mild adventure, and to experience a change in perspective that can never be taken away. I remember what it was like returning to the States after my first year overseas in Israel and Jordan (some years before the 1967 war that changed my life), Israel then a second-world country, and Jordan almost third-world. I remember walking into my beloved Marshall Field's in the Chicago Loop and being bowled over, almost sick to my stomach at the vast amount of gorgeous stuff available there. I had totally adjusted to "poverty", small plain stores with not much in them, nothing remotely resembling a supermarket anywhere, few people owned their own cars, there was no tv, as neither country had television then, and on and on. But people lived with so much energy and happiness, with appreciation for the details of life and with plans for the future, just as we do. I did not understand how my values had changed until I got home. I was seeing the world with diffferent eyes now; this is what happens when you go to a different (and sometimes more difficult) place - your humanity expands.

She was one of my mother-in-law's favorite authors. I usually read the books when MIL was finished, since they were easy reads. I read Where are the Children? before I had kids, but I had two little ones (a boy and a girl) when the movie was released. After reading the book, I wouldn't watch the movie.

I loved your stories about her, she was a Grand Lady, it is good to hear she passed peacefully and her services were as simple as she appeared to have lived.
It is always hard to say goodbye.

George, is this the same relative who recently travelled somewhere very exotic? I want to say Central America but can't remember. What I do remember is that it was awesome and I hoped I would have that same spirit of adventure at that age, if I'm lucky enough to live that long.

George and Leonne, I am sorry about your loss. I too liked your stories about your aunt and I wish that I would be half as active as she was at her age. I think she was an inspiration to everybody who knew her.

Yes Karen, she was in Costa Rica for the winter I think 3 years ago and 2 years before that she went to Australia for the winter. Her excuse was always "its a lot warmer than upper New York state".

George, I'm in awe of your family; all of you seem to have contributed so much in different areas of interest or vocation.

I'm sorry your aunt will no longer be here to share adventures and stories with you and Leone.
I know you both miss her so much and feel a deep loss within your family.

I'm sorry for your loss, and celebrate that you had such a wonderful aunt. I don't think I could imagine a better ending than going peacefully in my sleep after a long, full, active life.

I have to agree fully with Michelle, that's how I'd want to be if I had a choice. I'm glad you remember her so well and loved her. It's all she could want.

I'm sorry your Dear Aunt has passed. Your stories of her have always been wonderful. I hope that from time to time you'll think of a story and remind us/pass it on.

But - Gnadle - she's not really gone - she will be in your heart and mind so long as you draw breath.

And I know she has to have been very proud of the man you became.
