How do you define........

What do you think of when someone says they are looking for an area with "fun and exciting nightlife".....

I know than forums are not a good slice of humanity, but I really can't think of anything but sitting in a bar, getting drunk and being around similar people. Is this "fun"

What do you.....or did you do....for "fun and excitment" at night?

Oh gosh..........this is such a subjective question because 'night life' may simply mean an option of something to do in the evening but sit in a motel room. If you think about it, Disney World could translate into exciting nightlife.

I don't venture forth much in the evening when at home or when I am visiting my kin. My idea of a great holiday would be to be in a cabin in the boonies......but most people who travel would like something to do after supper other than going to their room and crashing in front of crappy television.

It could be local live entertainment, museums, boat rides, concerts in a park with fireworks, square dancing, lectures, wiener roasts, a luau or gambling, the races, a rodeo, or bars. It is just going to depend on what the person who asks the question is looking for.

I seems the best person to ask is a cab driver, especially a cabbie that has the airport connection. He/she has brobably heard that question many, many times and probably knows all the "fun" spots in town.

Well, that's why I said when I posted that that "your mileage may vary",lol. Its hard to tell people exactly what to expect and how their plants "should" behave when your comditions are quite a bit different from theirs. I can only tell you my experience HERE where I live. Perhaps you can draw from it. If it helps you that's great, if not, you may have to rely on the experience of someone in your same zone. Alocasia, Colocasia and Xanthosoma grown outdoors in the ground, or in water or a bog situation here are very variable in their reaction to cooler temps. We are in zone 9, but barely. On average, we get a few "frosts" (defined by ME at MY HOUSE as nights where the temps are between 27-32F) and a few "freezes" defined again by ME as between 20-27F. Xanthosoma and colocasia grown in water (ponds, natural bogs) sometimes NEVER go dormant. They can stay up all winter, even through freezes to 25-32F here. Sometimes it takes temps in the 20-25F range to knock mine back. However, Xanthosoma and colocasia grown as purely terrestrial plants in the ground will begin to respond FIRST to the decrease in water that accompanies the onset of fall here (we typically have very dry winters)by producing less leaves and smaller leaves. They are also responding to the shorter days. Once the temps fall into the upper 40's/low 50's at night and stay there, some of the terrestrial colocasia will disappear. Some won't. I find it depends on where they are planted. Those planted under tree canopy get less winter sun and disappear. Those in full sun stay longer. Alocasias are variable in their response to cooler temps as well. I have several species planted in my yard and they all behave a little differently. The trunking forms of alocasia (culcullata, calidora, odora, portodora, sinuatis, etc) will maintain their foliage usually until it freezes off in the 20-32 range. The trunks, however, stay intact, and generally no action is needed to protect them in our winters. The non-trunking forms (macrorhizza, frydek, black stem, plumbea etc) act more like colocasias. They begin to respond to less water and less light well before they begin to respond to cold. By the time the temps are in the 40's and 50's, they have usually disappeared for the season. They are dormant UNDER the ground, and we either just ignore them or maybe mulch over them til spring, when they pop right out again. If I was going to try to bring a container of alocasia inside for winter, I would bring it in NOW and put it in front of my sunniest window, and water it once a week. If the conditions were to its liking, it would stay up and growing as a houseplant. If not, the leaves would die back, then I would put it in, maybe, the laundry room? til Spring.

Where my beds are next to lawn, I spade edge once in the spring and keep it trimmed with the lawn mower the rest of the season. Most of the garden consists of exposed aggregate paths- no need for edging, or gravel paths between the beds. The gravel paths are edged with fieldstone- plentiful in this farm country except on my farm. But most farms locally have piles of stones located on the roadside to pilfer freely! The gravel paths go into the forest with fieldstone edging till they round a curve and then the fallen boughs edging starts in the forest near the house. this is fun- I collect fallen boughs of varying length and diameter in different piles after trimming sidebranches off. When I need the ''edging'' I go to the nearest stack, grab a bough that looks good and carry it along the path till it fits in the curve or along the straight. In the Westcoast rainforest, the boughs decompose, become moss covered and also grow ferns and other plants. The forest paths are packed earth that I run over occasionally with the rideon mulcher. Planting is varied along the edges... I'm 6'2'', 187cm...bending over to admire plants is not my thing. I edge with tall and medium plants and (try to) make tunnel effects thru the borders with different plants in focus depending on the viewing angle. How do you define 'Dated'?

The home shows call fixtures dated because fixture manufacturers sponsor the home shows and want you to buy more of their product. If something feels dated 10 years after being the best thing since sliced bread then you have fallen for the advertising industry's brainwashing. Almost everything is "dated" if you are familiar enough with it to estimate when it was manufactured. I think "dated" comes more from decorating that was done in response to fads than it does with regards to actual dates or eras. If everyone is doing granite and stainless steel because it is "in", then in 20 years granite and stainless steel is going to be looked at as dated because it is everywhere, reminds folks of the '00's, and they want the next newest and best thing. Classic elements are always a better choice than what is currently "in" and this is exactly why. It is entirely possible IMO to decorate a home that won't be dated in 20 years but you won't do it by following the advice of home shows and trend magazines. You do it by choosing classic timeless pieces to begin with and not just getting what everyone else thinks is cool or the latest greatest new thing.

Jim, thanks for posting, as usual you have a treasure trove of pictures for us to enjoy. They are wonderful photos and it is such a touching story of their lives together. It is interesting to me that the room structure is relatively simple (basic box and rectangle shaped rooms). The crown moldings are stream lined and not over the top, The decor and interest (for me) comes from the art on the walls (love that the art is lighted, wonderful for mood setting), the beautiful layering of their collections, and the great wall colors used in the rooms to evoke cozyness and yet is still very sophisticated. I could totally live in those rooms.

I used to Salsa and Swing dance. I love live music, art, comedy, theater and good food. "Good" for me, is ethnic, flavorful and creative combinations that I may not think of on my own. Our latest favorite is a little Vietnamese place, I love their green beans tempura with spicy dipping sauce.

A long time ago it was getting together with friends in a small pub and solving every riddle of the universe or go dancing. The last 30 yers I lived where even in the summertime the sidewalk gets rolled up around 8 PM.

The cycles of introvert and extrovert night life are apparent in age groups and how much spending money is available. Right now the money is low for most and night life suffers.

There used to be a place here in the '80s in Orange county that had entertainers that doubled as waiters and waitresses that would take turns singing and dancing to the tune of the five piece band. They did everything from opera to musicals to country and rock and roll and did it very well. The place was immensely popular and holds some fun memories for us and friends.

Alas it is gone now and the college crowd has taken over in our area. Our town has so many bars that it has become known as "party town". We seldom go down town at all and never on weekend nights. Too many crazy things for our liking.

I would think that that would mean a town with active live theater groups, a city orchestra, chorus, ballet, different dance troupes, live poetry readings, story teller groups, different small stage performances, restaurants and clubs within walking distance of each other, etc. Mine is a small city of less than 200,000 and we have that and much more. Oh, PLUS lots of bars where you can sit around and get drunk, lol.
