Double check on the bag to see the salt content. If it is high, I would mix it in the compost pile, where it will be more diluted - a little salt won't hurt, but a lot isn't good for plants. If it's low, then adding them to the pile - mixed in - or scattering them around in your yard and watering them until they go to mush both will work, and pretty much remove the fear of them being eaten. (Just as an aside, your dog or the neighbor's dog may also find them tasty - some dogs will eat horse feed and some won't.) You don't need to carpet the ground with them, just toss them around, so they are a few inches apart, before you water. If the bag seems really dusty - not too likely, but... - then a breathing mask, or working with the wind, is a good idea.

dibbit-I don't know what would be considered a high salt content. It's labeled as; max. salt .70%, which doesn't seem high to me, but I'm not sure what the parameters are on measuring this. Yes, my dogs would eat it 'til they burst, so I'll be applying it where I don't let them out, Just to keep any other critters from feasting, I'll water after applying it. Thanks for the input. I'm anxious to get the bag out of my garage and use the feed for something worthwhile.

I'm no expert, but I would imagine that was reasonably low for salt. If they also say anywhere on the bag to supplement the animal's diet with extra salt, it is definitely low!

I don't know your dogs, but if you water it very well, I can't think they would bother trying to get at the mush that has mixed down in with the dirt and mulch. But, I don't know your dogs.... Using where the dogs don't go, or just mixing it in the compost pile are good options, if you were to ask me.

Don't worry about salt in that stuff. I run it through a spreader. If you don't have a spreader- you can scoop it up with the top of a gallon water/milk jug and fling it to spread (cut out the top and handle together), or just by the double handfull.

Once it gets wet- the pellets expand and come apart. If you know it's going to rain- apply just before it, and it will melt well. I've not had issues with animals eating much of it.

I agree that throwing it out by hand is fine about 10-20 lbs. per 1000 square feet is a good amount for most plant life. I go a little heavier around heavy feeders such as roses and other heavier flowering plants. I can't think of anything I have used it on that didn't seem to respond to it. I use about 400 lbs as a general feed for my whole 3/4 acre in the fall and more targeted amounts in the spring. I also use it for everything I put in pots about a 1 gal nursery pot per 2 cubic foot of potting media works great for me. I always try to have a bag around just in case I need it. It is my mostest favorite general purpose ferilizer.
I also find that if watered in the critters (deer here) leave it alone. I do often time application for rain. Singing and flinging in the rain as it were:). Great for heating up compost as well.

Thanks pablo and hitex. for your help and insight also! My hubby poured some of these pellets in my flower bed and it may have been too concentrated as a Foster holly shrub just up and died. Could have been a coincidence, dunno, so I figured I'd seek assistance before distributing this 50# bag.

Ya- you don't want a pile of it. Just because it's organic doesn't mean it's not effective.
