Woodland plant - strange purple flowers

Hello,

I took a walk this morning through my woods and noticed this interesting flower. Anyone have any ideas?

Could it be Caulophyllum thalictroides - Blue Cohosh?

It isn't Convolvulus cneorum. That looks totally different. Not least because it never has flowers any other colour than white. BTW, not all Convolvulus are vines, C cneorum being an example. And you were right when you said the flowers looked similar to a bindweed flower, but not when you said 'I'm sure it is no relation'. Evolvulus and Convolvulus are in the same family, Convolvulaceae, as is Ipomoea, Morning Glory. How about Evolvulus nuttallianus? Here is a link that might be useful: E nuttallianus

The example in your photo may be misleading you as that is what it looks like after the actual flowers have dropped off. In the background of the picture on the left is a boom with the blue flowers still on it.

I think you're right! But I also didn't think either one should be blooming now/still - it's been a very strange year plant wise - also, these California poppies don't look anything like the packages of California poppies I've been buying as seeds....hmmm is there more than one kind of California poppy? the other more similiar to other poppy varieties in leaf structure, seedhead, and blooms?

It's good woman's medicine. Any herbalist would be excited to find that in the woods!

It is a beautiful plant at that and it is exciting to find. Unfortunately in part because it is not all that common to find. Blue Cohosh is on the United Plant Savers At-Risk List (link included below). Other herbs that are not at-risk should be harvested and used where ever possible rather than this wonderful woodland plant.

If your local library has a copy of Planting the Future ed. by Gladstar and Hirsch there is a section on blue cohosh written by Richo Cech. It is a nice and informative read.
