How to measure with multiples over the years, each one an entity in and of itself. I do envy them and not secretly.

You never forget them, from the first one as as toddler and all of them over 3/4th of a century, including the barn cats in the neighborhood.
On-upmanship? I never have seen an embarrased cat, they do everything on purpose, even if they fall of the ledge in their sleep.

My next door neighbor and I shared a cat for years. Her name was Buttercup. She would come for breakfast to our house, sleep in her special chair for a couple of hours, go back to "her" garden next door to catch a few rays, then show up for a nap when the sun was just right in our garden. We did not serve dinner so she went to the other house for dinner and slept in the garage for the night. When the end came near my neighbor and I shared in Buttercup's end.

Love it! "measuring out my life in friends that have succeeded but not replaced one other" really hits home... Applies to sooo much more than our little furry friends.
