I would let them grow together. You get a nice big plant with lots of blooms that way. Also, separated keikis are tender and slow to establish sometimes. Does it happen often? Depends on the ancestry-- doritis put out basal keikis like crazy. can form big clumps. I have had a doritis keiki just a few months old form another keiki. I think it's phal schilleriana that also can form keikis from the roots. So, depending on the ancestry, it would be not be uncommon.

Hello Andrea, you must be doing mostly good things with the culture to get a couple of blooms though they are out of season. Most bloom in spring which is a good time to detach the keikis and plant them in tiny pots. Some clones are more inclined to make keikis than others. Though too many keikis are the result of fertilising and too much water in the resting season (Late autumn through to winter).

Beth, thank you for posting your amazing roses! A pleasure to look at and very informative for me. When buying, I hoped for Surreal be just as bright as yours and grow next to my Easy Does It I absolutely love, but the plant labeled as Surreal is not even close in color intensity or even shade! I had just two flowers on it and now impatiently waiting for next bud to develop. My Tournament of Roses is definitely something different, flowers look similar to Cherry Parfait pictured on JP website, so it is definitely a mistake on JP part. My Spice It Up looks similar to yours, actually. I am not impressed by bloom color, size, and shape, but like plant vigor and the long-lasting blooms. Spice It Up also seem to be continuously blooming, new buds form fast. Thank you again for taking your time answering my question.

So let me try and explain "terminal spike" for you. This is when a phalaenopsis orchid sends a spike from the very top of the plant instead of on the side between the leaves which is where it normally appears. Now phals grow from the center up so by sending a spike there it indicates that the plant will no longer produce leaves and once it stops producing leaves then we all know what will happen. Plants are smart and once they realize that something is wrong they go into proprogation mode so they replicate themselves by sending out a keiki hoping to continue the generation. You might be wondering at this point what causes a terminal spike? Well sometimes just nature but sometimes other things goes wrong. Also please remember a spike does not mean a plant is healthy, a plant will send up a spike as a last resort hoping to get pollinated to continue its generation. Once it feels its in danger of dying, it will put all its energy into the spike. Your best bet is to as I said before check the roots if you can, green means good, brown means trouble. I have seen a phal send up a terminal spike and then send out leaves beside the spike and continued to grow but that's very rear. Or it will try and send out another keiki at the base of the plant, this is called a " basal keiki" . but that's another story.
