what's the stuff that looks like styrofoam in potting soil

I have read both vermiculite and perilite are made from lava rock or something like that.

I have felt of some of the white things that felt like tiny rocks, but in some soil mixes in feels like Styrofoam. Since I don't trust they would not stoop so low as to pollute my soil, with a petro chemical product I end up picking the stuff out of the mix. I try not to buy mixes with that junk in there, but it always comes in potted plants.

So someone, please let me know if I am wasting my time. I hope it is a natural substance and not Styrofoam. Its all over my veggie garden. I guess I dumped a few dead plants in my garden. If it is a natural substance, why does it look and feel like Styrofoam? Are synthetic chemicals use to puff this stuff like that?

If it is styofoam, will it ever break down in my lifetime?
