using leaves and pine needles in lasagna layers

Hi all

I am new, very new, to gardening and have decided to try the lasagna / raised bed method of building a garden. (as I have not eaten a decent tomato in a long while)

We got started yesterday and realised my research wasn't complete.

My plan was to rake up all the leaves in the yard and use that on top of the newspapers. Then a layer of the compost we get free from our county.

But... when I was raking up the leaves I got worried they were too dry? not broken down enough?

Last fall my husband piled up everything he raked in the back yard in a far corner. WE dug up stuff from that corner; it looked a lot better - black, crumbly, decomposing. But not near enough for all the beds.

So here is my question: will the stuff I raked up yesterday be suitable for a first layer?

Ancillary question: the stuff has many pine needles. Is this ok? Does it need some lime?

Thanks for your patience in answering what I am sure are repeat questions. I just couldn't find the answers.
