Thanks for the well wishes. They are saying it could snow in the Orlando area on Saturday night.

So far my low has been 30 but lasted over 4 hours. Daytime high was only 52. I remmeber ths cold snap of 82 that dropped to 26 and the always memerable "snow " of 78
but can't ever remember the cold lasting for so long.
Think I was saved from frost by a breeze off the ocean
Will see how my orchids do on the trees lol.Anything that could be moved was brought into the house.

Since I grow indoors, my orchids and plants are fine... but having to go out and battle the cold is not a fun time! At least we got decent snowfall which helps insulate the dormant rose bushes and other garden plants.

I, too, hope for the best for everyone in the south experiencing this cold snap... I hope your losses are minimal.

Thanks for the well wishes, I am in the Austin area and we are getting temps of 13 degrees and haven`t warmed up, our problem is we are just so unprepared so there will be much lost in the plant world here, even my indoor orchids are starting to suffer because I can`t get light to them, I need to keep them away from the windows. Florida is not fairing any better I feel so sorry for the citrus producers! But there is a warming trend early next week.:o) Deanna

Made it up to 34F today! But back down into the teens again tonight. Greenhouse is hanging in there, but I don't want to see the electric bill next month. Our regular landscaping, which is typically suited to our temperatures here, is beginning to suffer as well. Supposedly hardy plants and trees are getting badly frozen.

But, this isn't the first time and it won't be the last. These are typical winter lows for the area rather than record lows. I try to stay prepared each year in anticipation of freezing weather.

I managed to get all of the orchids inside or into the heated greenhouse. Covered 3 plumerias I had started for my daughter, but my 10 are still outside. They are in 5 gallon tubs, and I hope they make out all right. Good luck to the rest of you "warm weather" growers ....

Nick, don't ever fret when someone cares so much for you. I know it's a pain, but darn few people in this world love us so much. Be grateful for the concern, misguided though it may be.

It was 32 at 8:00, now at 11:16 it's 39. Could this be a trend ???

Here in SW Texas it got to 14 with driving winds and my main GH heaters went out, it was 32 out there for at least an hour. So many hard hits on my plants this year.

As I've been enjoying a gifted bag of citrus, my thoughts do turn to the citrus crop and those growers. Orchids are a hobby/passion not my livelyhood.

Ahh, can take it no more.... I had about 100+ orchid close to the wall in the patio, covered with sheets- it was such an eyesore even to my 'orchid loving' eye. We had guests today- had to move all the chids under the tree and now that the guests have left and I moved them back into the patio to be covered. I don't know what I despise the most - my guests or the orchids..... Need my 70's temps again...

sambac, consider it healthy exercise. People actually pay money to join health clubs just to get healthy exercise.

Had to count my blessings as I pulled in 250+---filling a bathroom, kitchen, dining room and TV room---couldn't do that by myself for the last couple of years.
Can hardly move in the house but thanking God for a wonderful surgeon and successful back surgery.

Nick, thanks for the good wishes. In the Minneapolis area yesterday about 10 am, it was minus 11F; about 5:30 pm, it was minus 14F. Luckily, this far North, we have all our orchids inside or in a greenhouse from mid- to late October or so, so no back and forth, covering plants, etc.

Non-orchid-wise, doing stuff outside can be a hassle, but the roads are always clear, except if we're in the middle of a heavy snow, when it can get slippery.

On the other hand... Arkansas ice storms are dangerous. The one time in the last almost 30 years the Twin Cities had an Arkansas-type ice storm, bus service stopped, the Post Office stopped, the U of MN stopped, government offices stopped, plus all businesses - total standstill.

People had been giving me grief for being a pansy weather gal from Arkansas. Hah! During the ice storm, I told them THIS is what we get several times a year in the Northern part of Arkansas, AND we have steep hills all over the place, unlike most of the Twin Cities. Their jaws dropped in proper respect, and my cred was *made.* Arkansas pansy no more!

I hope you all in the more ambiguous weather zones are making it okay.

I went out to walk the dogs before bed last night, and peeked at the thermometer on the greenhouse door. 40 degrees ???? The electric had gone off just long enough to shut off the electric heater. I reset it, and the temps were rising, so off to bed ....(10 PM last night).
