Relative humidity

I've started realizing (like some of you here) that humidity isn't that big of a deal (well at least for the things I grow - they seem to do fine...don't know about things like pleuros) But I was curious - I was looking at the weather reports a few days ago, and it was a really dry winter day (after a 20 minute walk, my lips were chapped and my face felt like sandpaper), but the RH mean for that day was at least 50%! I don't have a humidity meter in my house, but I hear some of you reporting lower than 40% humidity. Is it the heating that does it? Or do people use different ways of measuring RH outside and inside?
