Anyone Using Milorganite for Vegetable Garden?
Comments (53)I am not saying they are the "bad" guys. I am sure all the lab people and the laymen working for these agencies are good and honest. I just don't trust the people in the upper echelon of these agencies. Most or maybe all of the people running and managing these agencies have conflict of interest due to the practice of revolving doors. When the results are not favorable to the corporate interests they represent, they suppress the release of such information or they totally omit that part of the information. Too much industrial and corporate interests are vested in the outcomes of these studies and lab results. There are also too many instances where the corporate interests are placed before the interest of public health. You can find these instances in the following: addition of flouride into public water supply, suppression and manipulation of data by the CDC regarding MMR vaccine's role in autism, glyphosate's safety when review of Monsanto's records tell a different result... Glyphosate (Roundup)was once touted as safe for human use and approved by EPA. I unfortunately had believed these claims and used it in my home garden. Now studies have shown that exposure to this chemical can cause cancer and kidney failure and other health problems. All I am doing here is trying to protect myself from such a repeat of an occurence. I don't want to find out a few years from now that Milorganite maybe toxic. By that time, the damage is already done and the soil in my garden contaminated. Look I am not trying to stop people from using this stuff. If anyone is comfortable and ok in using this in your home, by all means use it. I am just asking for independent lab testing and its results. If you can provide me with this information, I am grateful....See Morecotton by products
Comments (21)I don't think tyclnx is saying that one can define organic gardening anyway one wants to. The poster is pointing out that people who aren't gardening organically, sometimes claim they are organic gardeners. People garden organically for various reasons. Some are following regulations because they cannot sell their produce as organic otherwise. People like me, chemically sensitive people, grow our own to get away from chemicals as much as possible. I think anyone who even considers organic gardening does have the hope to help prevent further pollution, or violation, of our environment. If you create your own compost, you are contributing much less to the garbage landfills than the average American. It isn't possible to be fanatical on the subject without driving oneself to insanity. As tclynx stated, I, too, will compost banana peels from conventionally grown bananas. But most of the produce I purchase is labelled "organic", so few non-organic kitchen scraps are going into my compost. I don't use chemical fertilizers or pesticides in my garden. If a person doesn't know that cotton is a heavily sprayed crop, using cotton burr compost compromises an organic objective. I do my own composting, but I cannot create as much as I need for my garden. Therefore, I also purchase commercial compost. I garden organically but I cannot claim that my garden is organic (according to standards and regulations). I have only had control of this land for five years. I don't know what was used on this land in years gone by. Luckily, I have no fear of ovespray drifting onto my land from conventional farmers. There are no farms in the area. Hamiltongardner, thanks for the definition of Hamas and Hezbolla. I don't see how it applicable to organic gardening. I think somebody is just bandying terms about to appear in the know. As for the perpetrators of Genetically Modified plants. Those fools are a threat to life on Earth. Their plants produce sterile seeds, as well as requiring copious amounts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Monsanto and other GM companies are trying to gain monopoly of the world's food resources. Nothing about what they are doing is for the betterment of humankind, as kimmsr stated, it is all about capitalism. The crops grown by one GM farmer can cross-pollinate an area of at least 50 miles diameter, which could contaminate all other farms in the area, causing their crops to have sterile seeds. Comments (4)Looking for mixture of heights. I like the color of lantana but not just at the ground level. My plan is to put different lantanas in raised beds in cascading color. You know, top red, then orange, yellow, then bright yellow. To look like a flow of color like water cascading. Of course, my mind and what I actually can achieve just takes effort and luck. I have seen professional landscapers with raised beds especially at the beginning of subdivisions. Sometimes they look bad because of the white hard water stains. Others are perfect for years. Thanks for the imput....See Moredamp proofing & insulating basement
Comments (5)I'd take down the paneling, let it all air out, and check for any cracks, etc. Also look for all sources of moisture, and there can be many: You might have: * moist "interior" air that condensed behind the paneling on on cold winter walls. * bad grade/drainage outside * clogged gutters that cause water to get behind your wall/ sheathing etc. and find it's way to the basement * cracks in the foundation etc, etc. Check all these and more. My prep for finishing our basement (which is about to go into high gear) has included crack repair, regrading, sealing some gaps around the main entrance above, installing a drip edge under the gutters, and adding another downspout for the less-than-occasional torrential rains. I'll be putting solid extruded foam insulation onto the walls next, and then frame it out in front of that....See Moremarshallz10
