What are your problem insects? Sticking with organic fertilizers usually is all you need to do to control the insects. What happens is once you stop killing the insects that are there with insecticides, you will see the return of birds, lizards, toads, and geckos. These are insect predators and will do quite a good job of controlling the bug population. If caterpillars are a problem, be sure you encourage paper wasps to live under your eaves. They fill each cell of their nest with a caterpillar so the more nests you have the fewer caterpillars there will be. Paper wasps will leave you alone if you leave them alone. You have to fight the urge to swing and swat at them.

If you're not supposed to spray bees with it or use around water, you have to ask yourself just how organic is it?

Unfortunately Garden's Alive was not kind enough to list the ingredients or show the label for this product on their website.

However, Pesticideinfo.org lists it's active ingredient as Spinosad.

The April, 2009 issue of Organic Gardening magazine has an article on page 30 that says, "Streesed plants, says on Turmel, an entomologist at Vermont State, emit pheromones or chemical signals that attract insects." and I would add pests.
Work on making your soil a good, healthy soil that will grow strong and healthy plants that will be less attractive to those insect pests, but until that soil is in the good, healthy condition use what is needed (this same article says the pest insect pest control you were born with, your hands) use the least toxic means to control these buggers as is possible. Often an Insecticidal Soap is all that is needed.

I use Bt on the sweetcorn silks and have done so for many years. Never had a worm problem, about 95%+ effective. Definitely, stressed out plants, like people, are an easier target for pests.

If caterpillars on brassicas and tomatoes are your primary pests, then Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) would be a much safer solution. I have no practical experience with it, but it's reported to be very effective (as the previous poster suggests) and poses much less of a risk to non-targeted insects.

Ditto Shazaam on the Brassicas, it works very well but, without a sticker or a very small amount of dish soap in the spray it just runs right off the leaves and heads when applying

All of the commercially available Bacillus thuringiensis sprays I have encountered already have a "sticker" mixed in. Adding some soap may render your application of this product ineffective. Unless the products label advises adding something there is no reason to do that. Read the label and follow those directions carefully.

I had to use BT last year, the darn cutworms were somehow getting over the collars of the Brassicas, it is very effective.

Kimmsr: Bonide is the brand. Trust me, without the soap, the spray rolls off the leaves like water off a duck's back. Even tried various spray droplet sizes to no avail. The soap breaks the spray's surface tension and voila! And yes, it is very effective on the "worms". Thanks for urging people to read and follow label directions, it can't be overstated.
