how much sulfur to use for blues
Comments (8)The native soil is around 7, my bark/peat mix measures at about 6.5. My well water is also at about 7......and I'm pouring gallons and gallons on it all summer. As you guys know, blues ideally like a soil that is in the 4.5 to 5.5 range. My plants are just barely showing some leaves and I haven't fertilized yet and mostly wanted to give them just a little bit of a push toward acidity as I move toward summer. When I do fertilize it will be with either ammonium sulf or an acid loving organic fert of some kind. Thanks again........... RM...See Morecan sulfur be mixed with sesame oil or soap
Comments (2)I wouldn't go spraying "dish soap" on plants. I think that idea came from "insecticidal soap" and people being cheap. I've heard of a lot of people who've damaged their plants grabbing any old soap they had. There are a lot of different soaps with a lot of different ingredients. Unless someone tells you exactly what soap they used and how much they used I'd let it go in one ear and out the other. There's a lot of good "organic" information out there, there's also a lot of crap. The kitchen cabinet stuff tends to lean towards the crap side of things. Adding soap to a spray is something different than "great for bugs". That is creating a "sticker". I've learned to be careful with real stickers. I wouldn't dare mix my own without a lot of testing. As far as oil, again unless someone gave you the exact recipe and you are able to go back on them when it kills your plants I would stick to bought brands that you can go back on. By the time you went out and bought a bottle of seasame oil, figure out the right amount of soap to use to get it to suspend in water, experiment on some parts of your plants to make sure it won't kill them you really wouldn't have saved much over buying proper dormant oil where all the testing has already been done. If you really want to make your own dormant oil there is a recipe floating around but it's mineral oil and an oil soap. I'm not sure if it's OK to use as a summer oil....See Morehydrated lime ,sulfur used as insect deterent?
Comments (2)I'm old enough to have heard of it ;) but can't say I have ever tried it. I have used sulfur powder as a repellent against chiggers and it used to be (before Deet) in many of the commercial insect repellents. But I did find this interesting chronology on it (they call it lime-sulphur). 1886 - Lime-sulphur-salt spray first noted: used against scale insects. 1902 - Grasselli Chemicals Company began manufacturing lime-sulphur insecticides. 1906 - Commercial preparations of lime-sulphur appeared for first time. 1918 - Wettable lime-sulphur introduced as spray. After that it disappears from the History of Insecticides. Can't hurt - might help. Worth a try. ;) Let us know if it works. Comments (1)Is the sink coated with anything to keep it shiny? If so, the finish has to be removed. Otherwise, the raw copper will turn brownish (like a penny) with use & exposure to air. Frequent washing with a damp sponge & letting it air dry will speed the process & isn't caustic like Liver of Sulphur....See Moredchall_san_antonio
