Help! Dog gnawed bark

I just planted one year old apple whips last week and I caught my dog gnawing on them this morning. She has taken off strips on one side about an inch long on several trees just above the graft union. Which on the small trees amounts to half way around. Looks like she just peeled away the bark with no deep gnawing into the wood. I've put wire cages around them now but what should I do about the exposed wood? Put some grafting sealant on it? Will that insulate it from the cold this winter?
