Wow, just about the most unhelpful posting IÂve ever seen. Somebody needs to reevaluate their place in society. I would rather have ONE typo in a FORUM than be the kind of person you seem to be. I have faith my dogs will be fine. I have had a dog that was trained that way, and it took little to no effort at all. That is the reason I posted this, because I know it is possible and needed a few tips that would help with her. Anyone elseÂs help is welcome. (P.S. can anyone believe this obvioulsy 50+ year old b!tch)

Although I agree that the response was uncalled for and rude, your response was juvenile, so let's move along.

1. Puppies will pee/poop when alone, because there is nobody there to let them out. The only way to stop this fairly quickly is to crate train, since canines do not like to soil their "den". A puppy should be able to hold it 1 hour for every month in age, ie, a 3 month old pup should be ok for 3 hours. Longer than that, and they will soil their crate, simply because they are physically unable to hold it for much longer.

2. Your other dog probably barks because he is alone. Dogs are pack animals, and do not do well without company, whether that be another dog or a human.

Here's an idea - keep the two dogs *together*. The older dog will teach the pup where to pee and poop. The younger dog will be a buddy to the older dog, and quell the barking.

The most important thing is, don't compare any dog with another. Just like us, they are individuals. What worked with one dog will not work with another, and trying to force the same training on every dog you own will end up in frustration for you and the dog.

First of all, we don't know the age or the breed of these dogs. If the older dog is a large breed and the pup is a small breed, then I don't think it's a good idea to let them hang out together outside, especially this time of year.

You said "because she will not understand why she is getting punished if we dont see her do it". I do hope you're not punishing your dog when you find, or see, her having an accident. The best advice I've seen written on house training your dog is, everytime the dog has an accident in the house take a newspaper, roll it up very tight, and then hit YOURSELF on the head. Dogs won't learn housetraining by being punished, they'll only learn to do their business out of your sight, somewhere in the house, thinking they won't get punished. A consistent routine and lots of praise will be rewards for both of you.

I think the puppy is confused because you leave her outside at your house and then she's expected to know what to do at your girlfriends house. It's difficult enough to housetrain a dog in one home, much less two homes.
Also, keep in mind that not all breeds learn at the same rate, so don't expect how well your dogs learned in the past to apply to your current dog(s).

As for the barking..........he wants to be with his pack........you. Why can't he come in the house? If he's playing at night then he's not getting enough exercise during the day. Try walking him every day, tossing a tennis ball or even go to a dog park. He's bored and it appears he has a lot of pent-up energy.

If you do a search on the web on 'housetraining dogs' you should find lots of info to help you with your pup.

One last note...........you may want to have the pup checked by a vet and make sure she doesn't have a urinary tract infection. Frequent urination is red flag for an infection.

joe - I agree, I hate not having an edit feature...I CAN type just not effectively all the time, and it does make one look foolish when the words in our heads are way different from the ones wee type.
OP - Leash walk your dogs more often. Your outside dog is suffering from the fishbowl syndrome, too much time spent in one area without outside stimulation - think about it, how bored would you be. Your dogs should be leash walked three times a day and on the weekends take em to a local dog park or on a hike or to a lake or somewhere new. Your "outside dog" is bored to death. Dogs are pack animals and it sounds like your dog spends too much time alone. As far as the puppy goes same thing, leash walk your puppy. Spend some time in postivie training sessions with your dogs, nothing can make them happier. Good luck.
