I have had two rat terriers since April. One is 2 one is 4 years old. I adopted them from a shelter. They basically fudged the truth about the dogs. Said they were house trained (they were/are not) and some other things. I make sure I take them outside several times a day and stay out with them until they do their business. However, neither of them will go to the door when they need to go out. I tried giving them treats when they go out but then the younger one caught on once when she cried to go outside and I took her out and rewarded her with a treat. She spent the rest of the night whining wanting to go out (to get a treat) not because she needed to use the bathroom.

So instead of treats I just praise them for going out. When I can not watch them I have to put them in their crate (a large wire cage) because otherwise they will poop and pee on the carpet and are ruining my floors. They are in their crate for nine hours while I am at work. THey are also in their crate at night for 8-9 hours. I used to let them sleep on my bed but they would get down in the middle of the night and make a mess on the floor.

Recently I have noticed that one of the dogs is peeing in the crate. It happens when I am at work, and it happened last night when I was sleeping. The dogs have been to the vet to check for infections and they received a clean bill of health. Any dogs that I have had before would NEVER mess up their crate because it is where they sleep. I am going to separate the dogs and place them each in a different crate tomorrow to find out which one is peeing in the cage.

Otherwise I have no idea what to do. There is no way I can have someone let them out during the day while I am at work, I make sure they go outside right before bedtime. They do not have access to water in their crate.

I have no idea what to do. Any ideas?

Hopefully you realize that when a shelter says a dog is house trained, it usually means that in a foster home or previous home the dog had learned to go outside. It never means that a dog in going to come in a new home and be perfectly trained. The dog has to adjust to the new surroundings and the new owner needs to treat the dog as though it's a new puppy coming into the home. 'House trained' dogs usually catch on fast so there's a shorter period of training.

Training one dog can take a lot of time, but you brought in 2 adult dogs which makes things even more difficult.
I'm not surprised you're having problems since the dogs aren't having much of a life. 18 hours in the crate out of a 24 hr day is not fair to any animal. Rat terriers are smart, active dogs and are quick learners. How much exercise do they get each day? Do you take them out for long walks after you get home or just quickly put them in the yard?
If you don't have the time needed to train and exercise them, then I think you should consider rehoming at least one of the dogs. Then you can work on house training the remaining dog so that he can live in the house vs a crate. From your description, it just sounds like you don't have much time to spend with the dogs.

I work 8 hours a day and since they can't hold it overnight I have to treat them like puppies and keep them in the crate at night. When I'm home, during the summer I would always take them outside and play with them for about an hour, now playtime is in the house (the younger one loves toys), throwing a ball etc. They also like to follow me wherever I go so they get exercise that way. In the summer I used to take them for a lot of walks in the park. They are very hyper when I get home from work but after playing for awhile they want to nap.On weekends they are out of their cage the entire day if I am home which except for running errands, I am normally home. Sometimes (since it isn't hot out anymore, I take them with me for car rides (they love to ride in the car) I have thought about finding a good home for the younger one but I hate to separate them since they are pretty attached.

He does have a pretty face! Off topic, but do you know if he is mixed breed? He looks so much like my Abby did, she was lab/rottie- people thought she was a purebred lab, but she had the very distinctive facial expressions of a rottie. I can't get over how much that picture of Arlo reminds me of Abby! Especially with the raised eyebrow... My old girl had some control problems as she got older. We just went with the flow (no pun intended) and tried to encourage her to stay in the hard floor areas if she was going to have a problem. If we suspected it wasn't going to be a good day, we'd put newspaper down and she understood what that was for- probably because we put it in the area where she would always go if she couldn't hold her bowel or bladder. We could never kennel Abby either, it just wasn't conducive to her personality type; she was never abused or mistreated, but she did not like being in a confined space like a kennel. If we needed to control her location, we had much more luck with gates and fences to confine her to a given location. Fortunately we've lived in a few houses with large expanses of hard floor- she was always OK with being confined to a single room of the house for limited periods of time, providing it was decently sized and she could see out (i.e. no closed doors). If that's an option, I'd go with that, making sure to keep the room comfortable for him with his bed and such- and put down paper while he's confined there in hopes that he gets the idea that it's for peeing on. An untreated UTI can easily last months. Just think about it- if it has never been treated why would it go away? I would definitely have the dog checked out by a vet. I'm sorry, but an owner cannot diagnose a medical problem especially without labwork such as at least a urinalysis. Also young dogs can have congenital problems that cause increased urination. UTIs are not the only reason that a dog would be inappropriately urinating- other serious and even potentially life threatening diseases can cause inappropriate urination, and these problems can sometimes be treated or even cured. But not without seeing a vet. If the vet rules out medical causes for inappropriate urination, then the advice given here for potty training is very good. But only after medical causes are ruled out by the vet. I've thought my own dogs have been relapsing in housebreaking before, but a simple urine culture told me otherwise. Gave K'Ehleyr an 8 week course of antibiotics (she is older, so needed a longer course) and the problem was solved, as confirmed by the second urine culture. K'Ehleyr always preferred the rug by my back door, so it seemed very behavioral, but it was not. Be careful with the doggie panties. Urine scald can easily result from urine on the skin for any period of time. Frequent bathing would be necessary. If this is not possible or practical then do not use doggie panties.

He's just marking the bed as his territory. He doesn't know why you'd have a problem with that. If you wanted it -- YOU would have already peed on it... I have 11 dogs, down from 12. They are rescues and some are going to be rehomed and some are here to stay. When I had #12 she and her sister had pee wars on my bed and I was ready to kill them. 55 pound pit bull mixes make a lot of widdle! Now Katie is in her new home and Hannah no longer has to compete with her so the sprinkling has stopped. They do still pee on the dog beds though especially my domiant tiny Shih tzu/Yorkie girl. Get your little darling neutered when its time and make it plain the bed is YOURS and not his and it will help. I'd also block access to the bed until he is older. By the way doing dominace rolls with a small puppy can scare him. They are falling out of favor as a way to deal with breeds like Rotties and pits and that's not a bad thing. Here goes - first thing in the morning, you should be taking both dogs for AT LEAST A 15 minute walk. If you are home all day, another 15 minute walk in the afternoon and another walk then again before dinner and again right before you go to bed. My dogs have been trained with positive reinforcement, when I take them out I do not have an agenda. When they pp I give them the command to pp, when they are just about finished, I praise them. I take my pets out to different places as much as possible. No matter the weather we stay out until everyone is empty. It takes about 2 weeks to train dogs to go number one and number two on command. If I am in need of meeting an appointment, I can take the dogs outside, tell them to pp outside or make a meadow muffin or touchdown and I can put them back in the car for a later walk which I will do as soon as possible. I change up their routine, taking them to a local park, dog park, open space area, fire road or beach, does not matter as long as they get new smells and a new place to explore. I have had dogs in my life since birth and have never had an accident in the house after the 2 weeks have gone by and my dogs all come with issues. Walking your dogs often and for at least 15 to 30 minutes costs nothing, keeps you and your dogs healthier and keeps you aware of things going on in your neighborhood...a win win win situation.
