My dog just Pee'ed on my bed!!!

OK, I have a 13 week old Rott named Jake. Beautiful dog. nearly 100% house trained. Smart, very smart. he has never been on our bed. Tonight he was playing while my wife was making the bed, and he has just learned he can jump. Thinks he is superman. He leaps on the bed and within 2 seconds pee's right in the middle. Normally does not even come in the bed room and does not know thats where we sleep, because he sleeps down stairs, in his "crate room" What made him do that? It was not that he had to pee, he had just been out. And the bedclothes, were fresh washed... I was probably overly harsh with him, but I can not understand why??? Of course he is a domanate dog, being a Rott, but we all.. me,wife,daughter... assume domanate rolls over him with no problems. So if he does not know we sleep there, and he is not domanate in the house, what would make him do that? It was definatly intentional. Any Ideas??

I don't think dogs do things "intentionally" in the same way humans do. Jake is not trying to be naughty or dominant. From my experience with puppies, he may have been confused about what he was supposed to do. More likely, he was marking territory.

Years ago two young dogs (about a year old) we got from the pound did the same thing in our house (after we had been through careful housebreaking). Solution? Give them less territory in the house to move around in and close the bedroom door tightly. Praise them and give them treats when they went in the right place.

A few months later they had gotten the idea and we could safely let them in a larger area of the house. We kept increasing the area they were free to move in until at about age 3 they could be trusted anywhere and knew to ask to go out (if we were at home) or to go down to their papers in the cellar (if we were late).

I also think he was marking territory. He's not neutered, right?

I adopted my current dog when he was about a year old and newly neutered. For the first few weeks I discovered he was peeing on clean blankets and his freshly washed beds. Then I noticed that at the times he was doing the deed he was always in an excited state and playing/jumping around with his bedding. I stopped allowing him on the sofa that had a blanket and whenever he'd start 'roughing it' with his bedding I'd tell him to leave it and to lie down. The peeing no longer occurs.........

I omitted Frontline from my initial post accidentally, we have been using this for a couple years now, initially it worked very well and we would find ticks on the floor, some dead and some which had perhaps bailed off the dog, dead one's which were partially engorged but still in/on the dog. The effectiveness has waned over the last year and I find, during my twice daily close inspections, ticks in various states of engorgement regularly. Being yellow (the dog) the ticks are very easy to spot and usually they come out on top of the fur within a few moments of his laying down and I can walk over and simply pick them off and put them in my alcohol filled tick-jar; the only way to truly grasp the sheer number of ticks I find on him. He got lime disease two years ago, it was amazing in that it dropped him in three days; he went from his normal extremely active self, to me carrying him to the car for a trip to the vet in 72 hours flat. I presume that any mammal can contract lime disease? I am wondering, with their prevalence here, how much of an issue we will have with the goats, donkey, pony we are preparing for, and ticks/lime. I know right now I spend ten minutes in the AM and ten minutes in the PM with the dog giving a good petting/scratching/brushing in search of ticks and if the case will be the same with the other animals I fear I could be spending an inordinate amount of time searching them for ticks. Might cause me to reconsider.

SG, Thank you so much for your insight--I believe you are a true "dog whisperer"! Let me clarify a few things and ask specific training & environmental questions: First I'll say, due to you and Annz' kind help, I believe I have corrected one of my problems. When I designed our new home I made space under the wall cabinets in the laundry rm for the dogs' kennels--next to each other. I thgt I was so smart doing this, but for my dogs' personalities, this may be one big problem. So hours ago, I moved Tiger's kennel to a different room (pantry next to L. rm) and he went right in! So now they will have their own space--away from each other. ~~I am also not going to allow either to sit under my desk while I am working--maybe that made Pepper (the Wheaton) think Tiger was getting special treatment (?). #2: The dogs do know I am TOP DOG for I, also, use their food & bowls to show my dominance--pretend to eat a kernel from their bowls before putting bowl down--pick up while they are eating & touch them/their food while they are eating. Never a problem--never a growl or resistance. Also, when we pass thru a door outside I am to go first, after I have them sit-stay & wait for me. I have them sit/lay/stay on command from time to time during the day to reinforce this too. ~~A trainer I consulted after the first attack told me that they both knew I was top dog but I did things to allow Pepper to think she was my equal--that we were BOTH top dogs. So I've been doing these things for a long time---more strictly for about a yr--but now you'll see NOT STRICTLY ENOUGH. ***Let me be specific in my info and question: When I open a door to let them out, Pepper does bolt out the door ahead of me about 1/3 of the time. I use my correction sound (Ehhhhh) and she immediately returns to my side to sit/stay until I give her the "OK" to move. (Sometimes just hearing the correction sound from me, she stops & returns to my side.) Specifically, WHEN I say sit/stay--she ALWAYS obeys. If I give NO command, she will start thru the door. ~~~Writing this out, I see I'm slacking and creating top dog DOUBT in her mind. So she isn't totally convinced that I am top dog? Or am I teaching her that I AM top dog but if she "assumes a top dog behavior" there is no real consequence besides "re-doing the situation" and moving on? SO, I need to go back to square one and take better control--using a lead to control, give commands EVERY TIME AND be persistent. But is it as "simple" as that? I can & will do these things correctly now but what else am I doing or what else can I do. Surely my "allowing" her to even consider disobeying my top-dog status isn't the only reason she's "comfortable" risking punishment in order to attack Tiger? I believe Tiger knows Pepper is Alpha dog and is comfortable with it. It has to be ME & my behavior that affects Peppers attacks. I have never allowed my cats outside because I was scared to death that something like this would happen. We live out in a remote area where there are lots of wild animals. We do have leash laws, but no one to enforce it. Animal control was called and that is when I found out that there were two dangerous dogs in our area. But that was to late to help Sebastian. I am a member of our community committee, and we have a meeting coming up in Sept. Believe me, there will be some changes made about getting word around about these kind of issues. We have never let Sebastian out without our supervision. Then he started spraying in the house more and more(he was neutered), and we tried everything to help him overcome that. The vet had him on anti-depressents, but he just laid around and didn't even function while on them. We figured that it wasn't any life for him to just lay around when he was such a outside lover. The only way we decided to give him the best life we could was to let him out during the day and bring him in at night. He would always come when I called him home, until Wednesday night. Then Thursday night my husband went to see if he could find him hiding somewhere and found him dead on the beach. I chased off the two dogs that killed him, but little did I know that they were after my baby. Thanks for all your understanding and concern. I just wish that neighbors would be more considerate also. I just don't know what else we could have done.

'Why on earth would you allow a breed like that in your home is beyond me. Keep the pit mix and expect more of the same incidents in the future.' Why would you question what type dog a person has if they are a responsible owner, as sarah appears to be. She has realized that there is a problem and working to resolve it. This dominance/jealousy problem could have risen with any breed dog, not only a Pitt. I have been around/worked with dogs all my life; the three times I was bitten was by a Cocker, a Jack Russell and a Sheltie. Pitts are not the top bitters, but as larger dogs they do more damage when they bite. A lot of smaller dog bites are also not reported making their bite statistics lower on the list. I've seen Pitts who were wonderful "people/kid dogs", who were wonderful pets and great with other pets and I've seen Pitts who were wonderful pets but couldn't be trusted around other pets, same as can be found in any breed. I can't say I would never have a Pit because I've had too many rescues to say never but I probably wouldn't go out and intentionally get a Pit due to not knowing bloodlines or how the animal had been raised. At one time there was a guy here in Florida who bred Pitts just for fighting. He took the worst of the worst and bred them over and over. If you got a dog from his bloodlines in error, you could very well have a problem because this IDIOT had bred them to be vicious. I've seen people who want their Pitts to be bad and train/abuse them to be so. Sadly, in cases like these the dogs are the ones who suffer. Personally I think that people of this ilk, people who fight dogs and people such as this breeder need to be put into a cage and forced to fight in the same manner which the dogs are forced to do. Animal abuse laws aren't strict enough in my opinion. People who abuse animals have no respect for any kind of life as far as I am concerned. Bless you sarah for fostering.

I also think he could be marking territory, but a UTI should also be ruled out if he has had these types of accidents before.

That said, your dog is not going to be considered house trained until he has no accidents for nine months. Crating, hard work and commitment are essential to getting this under control.

I recently have house trained two dogs, one 4 months old a male, was done in 3 days. The other, a 5 month old female, in two days. Both times, crates were used to promote other positive behavior.

Our 16 week old puppy pee'ed on our bed yesterday. I just bought a new quilt Saturday, washed it and put it on our bed and not 5 minutes later Cooper hopped up on the bed and wet. I hurried and took it off so it wouldn't soak through everything. I placed in the laundry room and by hell if he didn't walk in an hour or so later and wet on it again! I chalked it up to him being a puppy and marched him right out of our room and closed the door.

He's just marking the bed as his territory. He doesn't know why you'd have a problem with that. If you wanted it -- YOU would have already peed on it...

I have 11 dogs, down from 12. They are rescues and some are going to be rehomed and some are here to stay. When I had #12 she and her sister had pee wars on my bed and I was ready to kill them. 55 pound pit bull mixes make a lot of widdle! Now Katie is in her new home and Hannah no longer has to compete with her so the sprinkling has stopped. They do still pee on the dog beds though especially my domiant tiny Shih tzu/Yorkie girl.

Get your little darling neutered when its time and make it plain the bed is YOURS and not his and it will help. I'd also block access to the bed until he is older.

By the way doing dominace rolls with a small puppy can scare him. They are falling out of favor as a way to deal with breeds like Rotties and pits and that's not a bad thing.
