Best 2 Cycle oil

Now that Mobil 1 is gone,what would you guys suggest as a replacement 2 cycle oil for our Lawnboys.I know a guy that mixes used motor oil at 32:1 in his Lawnboy this can't be good.Although he claims it runs fine and does not smoke more than normal.

I'll use the 3 quarts of Mobil 1 I have left and go from there.Thanks

Mobil 1 in a 2 cycle. That's a new one on me. There's been a lot of oil talk on this site but not about Mobil 1.

He means Mobil 1 2T two stroke racing oil.

You can't ask a question like this and get a right answer.

I use Valvoline TCW3 two cycle oil in all my two cycles including my lawnboys. Never had a burnout yet.

While it is true that 2 cycle oil has an additive package that is ment to be consumed I would not worry about using regular automovtive 30wt oil as a preservitive. You will not be burning enough of it to cause any amount of deposits. However if you wanted to use some Marine Fogging oil to protect the cylinder and valves I would consider that the best. Don't forget to re-install the spark plug and bring the piston up on the compression stroke to close the valves and the cylinder to the outside air. Good luck!

Well, back in "The Olden Days", we used a half-pint of motor oil in a gallon of gas, and that mix worked in 95% of anything i used, in the two-cycle range! now, since the advent of better engineering, and better materials from which the engines, etc, are made, it was only natural to go to a better fuel formula-oil to gasoline mix. So-read what they recommend for your engine, and adhere to it! So--it takes multiple fuel containers--label each container, and instruct you wife and off-spring as to what goes where, and i'm quite sure you will have excellent results! A man called and asked me to come get his lawn mower for a spring tune-up. Before i could get there, we had a deep spring snow, but i went anyway. His son was blowing snow , but ran out of fuel (2-cycle). While he was looking for the can, his sister ran out,with a full can, filled the tank, grapped the starter rope, and got it started. (She wanted to use the machine, but her brother had grabbed it first!) I don't have to tell you what happened next, but here goes: BOOM, grate, clank--silence! I took it home as a gift, for parts! The can was not labeled! She got plain gasoline.

As long as you keep your fill cans vent and lid on tight I doubt you will have a problem. Stihl really messed up with the BR 4-Mix by not doing their homework and not only introducing the fully synthetic but also requiring it. We have had a ton of carbon problems with them using the standard oil which was what was initially advised. The synthetic should all but eliminate those problems and allow you to really enjoy your purchase. These 4-Mix BR's are the most air moving blowers I have seen. They are quite by comparison and have a nice sweet 4 stroke purr. Yes the synthetic is more expensive but keep in mind the 4-Mix engine is much more fuel efficient, you will darn near break even when compared to using less expensive regular Stihl oil in a 2 stroker of this size.

In any case, I certainly stand by the statement that increasing the the oil & gas mix ratio over the manufacturers recommendation - is somehow beneficial. This has always been a myth, and though well meaning perhaps, a very misguided one. It's not really debateable. It is not a good idea, and anyone who has ever disassembled a 2 stroke subject to this abuse knows why! "Modern two stroke engines virtually never foul spark plugs from excessive oiling. Rich fuel mixtures and weak ignitions foul spark plugs." Well we're talking two strokes in general, though they certainly can get fouled if the oil ratio is high enough. It is also very common for people in general to use the gas & oil mix ratio terms interchangeably with AFR, they are not, although excess lubricating oil in the fuel actually leans out the AFR e.g. "I run a rich mixture". Bzzt. I don't believe we disagree on anything but we have to define our terms. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.

Opti-2 at 66:1. It's not synthetic but kept all my 2-cycles running fine for years. After I sold my 2-cycle Lawn-Boy mowers, I don't bother to try to find it anymore. I use Homelite synthetic blend 'Exact Mix' at 50:1 in my trimmer/blower, Mantis tiller and chain saw. For my 4-cycle mowers, I use Opti-4 SAE 30 in the Tecumseh engine and Royal purple 10W30 'Max Cycle' in the Honda engine.

I received a flier from Sears, the other day, and in it
they feature a 2-cycle fuel, and make the claim that
you will never have to mix oil and gas again!
It looks like a quart container, (Yungman take note).
AND it is 'only' $4.99. WOW !! I can't dilly-dally
any longer. I must get to my Sears store!!!

That stuff is supposed to be pretty good but I'll bet its expensive. It would be handy for the occasional user.

I hear it does not contain ethanol. Ethanol destroys small engines.

Thanks for the info Indy452. I didn't know about mobil 1 two cycle oil. A while back on this site there was a link describing Shell 2 cycle oil for use in ultralight airplane engines. Has anyone ever used this product.I use Opti-2 in my newer Lawn Boys( the ones with ball bearing main bearings). My older non ball bearing mowers still get Lawn Boy 2 cycle Oil at 16 to 1.

Yeah, Mobil 1 2T has been discontinued and no replacement so many people that used this oil are looking for a good replacement. I've tried Amsoil and I thought it was O.K, I feel kinda freaked out mixing it @100:1 like it says but I tried it with no damage done. I could see 50:1 but 100:1 is just too lean for me.

Opti2 is a good product but like the Amsoil the ratio is relatively high also. I think like 66:1 or something.
I agree one mix for all 2 cycles is nice though.

Isn't the lawnboy oil pretty much useless in the sense that the carbon buildup is a pita to remedy?

Well, I wouldn't say its useless. Its ashless oil meaning it won't leave as much carbon as say 30W oil like in the days gone by. Actually Lawnboy oil would be a good oil to use if none else can be found.

I mix hardware store stuff at 32:1. My Lawnboy specs 32;1 the saw 40:1, and the weedwacker takes 50:1. No problems with fouling in 30 yrs. Higher price mix oil is mostly due to advertisement budgets.

For folks who want to take the easy route, the Echo semi-synthetic is good stuff. You can find it anywhere, including HD, and I'd feel comfortable using it in any 2-stroke equipment. I ran it for some time, and found that it was a very clean burning oil.

As for the "good stuff," I'm going to finally switch over to Klotz (R50, I suspect, though some swear by Supertechniplate) when I make it through my last 20 quarts of Mobil MX2T...

It was recommended to me to use the Echo stuff in the 1988 Lawnboy and even the late 50's Jacobson by my local dealer. A 8 ounce bottle to a gallon of gas.

equinox_grow, Echo oil at 16:1 ??? That's ridiculous. Dealers have no special knowledge on the subject beyond what they read on the label. They do like to sell oil though.

Perhaps he made a mistake? 8oz of Echo oil per gallon is more like 8:1! By far too much oil especially for the 1988 lawnboy. I have some Echo power blend oil and it comes in a 2.6 oz bottle and makes 1 gallon!! I'm not sure of the ratio because it does not say on the bottle.

Echo oil is a good product but that ratio can be thinned down by a mile.

My mistake. 2.6 ounce bottle to one gallon of gas. I wasnt thinking clearly at that point.
