Briggs I/C 20 HP OHV V-Twin backfires once it warms up.

I am trying to figure out what is causing my neighbor's mower to backfire once it warms up or is put under load.

It is a Craftsman LT1000 with a Briggs I/C 20 HP OHV V-Twin. The numbers on the OHV cover is : Model 40777; Type 0167 E1.

The engine runs fine at idle up to mid RPM. Once above the range (or while mowing), the engine starts to backfire (not a real harsh backfire, just a mid range backfire).

One thing I noticed is that one exhaust manifold (right side while sitting on mower) is much cooler than the other side.

Your thoughts? Air/carb adjustment? Timing? Valves?

Thanks in advanced for all your help,

Dave
