Illini Blackberry patch

I think they're called Illini- it's some newer hybrid or something that I can't get to produce anything. They're very big plants and fairly healthy but I've only gotten two tiny little clumps of sour then rotten berries. It's been about six years. I hate the huge thorns. Should I just get rid of them?

Get rid of them sooner rather than later, because later you might find the task impossible. Illini will expand into an impenetrable thicket with nasty thorns.

On the other hand, they do produce well for me on my site. The berries are fairly large and tasty. I think I got the plants from Miller Nurseries.

I gave up and tossed them. I think the problem is that most blackberries are wild plants. You must have found a good spot to plant them.

You could have blackberry plantlets from the root pieces (along with seeds from fallen fruit left in the soil sprouting more blackberries). If you're willing to keep an eye on this soil, vigilantly removing any sprouts, it can be used. Screening the soil might help if there's a lot of root...getting some of the stronger roots out of the soil. Some chicken wire on a frame (or something similar) screening it into a barrel/wheel barrel/tarp/etc. If the berries grew extremely well in this patch the soil itself might be a bit low in pH, too...so that might be a concern adding it to a garden in large amounts unless it could help the pH of the soil you're applying it to. Brian: There is no reason why the Apache blackberry should not do well in coastal South Carolina. I don't think I would be concerned about inadequate winter chilling hours, since this blackberry is grown as far south as Florida. Hot, humid summers is just what blackberries like, so long as the soil they are planted in is not allowed to dry out completely. I know that you have had an unusual dry period in SC this season, and in these conditions you would want to water the plants deeply about once a week, especially if your soil is light and sandy. But you can help this situation by mulching the plants with whatever organic mulch you can find, to help hold moisture in the soil and feed the plants. I use stable manure that consists of about 70% wood chips and 30% horse apples, but chips or sawdust from lumber mills, compost, or even grass clippings would be fine. I grow the trailing thornless Triple Crown and Doyle here, and we are picking their big berries right now, with the season extending to about the last week of August. Apache sounds as good or better than what I am growing, although it is hard to beat Doyle for total production. We just made our first batch of blackberry jelly tonight with a mix of these two varieties, and it is pretty good stuff. You can't buy anything of this flavor and quality. My Doyle blackberries came as a 1' tall plant, which was fully leaved out. During my discussion with the company (for another reason), they said it was fine to plant them (even with them being fully leaf'd out), and a frost wouldn't hurt them. I didn't get an exact temperature from him, but he made it sound like mid 20's wouldn't be a problem. He said that my plants had already been through frosts after being grown in Florida, and then living outside in Indiana for a while. If you plant them and it is going to get cold, you could always put a hat (bucket, leaves as Scott mentions, or something) over the top of them. Good luck, -Glenn

Not that I'm aware of... a broadleaf herbicide or non-selective, like Roundup, would be indicated. But,even with the 'low-volatility' 2,4-D products, you might get some damage due to off-gassing. Roundup in a hand-spray bottle - with good control, and no wind - would be my choice, if I weren't willing to pull those little babies by hand.

You could try raspberries, although they too are great at spreading out of control. Still both raspberry and blackberries rock for taste. Raspberries are a lot more winter hardy, and in 6a, it may be a concern. I have to protect my blackberries here.

OK people. Illini are hardy to -23 degrees. They are an upright thorned variety. I've had them for ten years. They produce extremely well and fruit heavy when I mulch them VERY thickly with goat manure bedding. They were developed to send out very few shoots. I give my shoots to friends; when we are fortunate to have a runner to two. I grow mine using the same technique as for grapes. In rows 3 feet apart. I put in two poles about 10 feet apart. I run cloths line about 1 and 2 feet about ground. I take the canes and weave them into the line. This makes picking the berries a breeze. I'm in zone 6A. I should mention they like well drained loamy soil. Mine are planted on a hill in red clay, and as I said, I lay a thick layer of goat manure bedding, maybe up to a foot deep.

Yeah- I have no doubt that if I'd been patient enough they would have produced fine. Although they'd take up tons of space without serious pruning and in parts of the country you can just pick wild blackberries.

I agree, the problem with the blackberries hardy in the colder zones is they are not that great, say compared to boysenberry, or marionberry. Which are blackberry-raspberry hybrids. Some new ones are around too. Columbia Star and Newberry. I grow all of these but have to protect them in 6a. So you might as well pick the wilds. Although I want to try this one and Darrow and Nelson all very hardy blackberries. I heard Darrow is better than illini, and a bigger berry, less thorns too.
