I had my first Ambrosia Apple

Yesterday I was in the supermarket and the first time have seen allot of them.

One HUGE box was full and the price was $ .98 lb , only bought two, just to taste.

There were other ones, organic, about double in price.

Anyway, this was a AWESOME apple!...everything you want from a apple.

Any of you tasted it?

This is a chance seedling discovered in B.C. in the early 1980's. The apple is owned by Wilfred and Sally Mennell, Cawston, B.C Canada

I had some a few years ago and wasn't impressed, but it isn't fair to judge an apple by one purchase. The apples I bought were all from one lot and you don't know how they were grown or stored, etc.
If memory serves this is a private brand, meaning that you have to have a license to purchase the trees and grow them and sell them. It is different than just paying the royalty on a tree variety.
I'm glad you liked them, just wish we could grow them.

Very true, the same apple can have a HUGE variation.
Somebody gave me some Honeycrisp, still have a few, but they don't taste good at all.
I think these were picked too early, tree is in a shaded area and was too loaded with apples.
I don't think that Ambrosia will be a apple for my zone 3.

Apples leaf out as they bloom. You should be able to see the swelling or opening fruit buds. If they don't bloom it's likely that they carried too many apples last year. They need to be heavily thinned while the fruit is small in order to bloom the next year.

Ambrosia is protected by a Plant Breeders Right in Canada and other parts of the world and also by a Patent in the USA. At this time the variety is not available for back yard plantings.

Eric, last summer early in the morning about 8am I heard my Tabby cat growling and looking out the front door. Sure enough, there was a turkey walking around and pecking at stuff in the ground, just muttering to herself. I thought I had heard turkeys in the back meadows, but this one decided to take a stroll out in the open. I'm rural, so we get lots of wildlife...last nite the coyotes were running through the backyard and howling, but you're pretty much in the city limits, aren't you? Hopefully you'll get to see more turkeys. I was hoping mine would stick around and eat lots of JBs, but no such luck. -terry

Many people who built FT are stepping up from smaller systems be it DIY or bought. Once the FT is "ready" for worm population, either an entire tray or partial bin got dumped into the FT in 1 place and let the worms explore the new frontier at their own pace. So it's not as if the worms get up rooted and moved to a different environment, instead, the worms including their usual environment is placed into a larger space. In theory, anything wrong with the new space, the worms can always stay put or move back rather than wandering further. It also means that a lot of MO came to the new FT from the dumping. I have re-read your post ""I did it...I made a flow through bin!"", so your worms are all recently bought. I think you misunderstood the concept when people were writing about their FT and reporting how much food they throw in there and it's still OK. IMHO, even with an FT, if the worms were shipped just with some of their bedding, you still have to go slow to get the worms over their shock and/or stress. I didnÂt know until I joined the forum that worms could experience shock and stress, just like us. I have read of a guy who built a wooden FT and bought the worms with the VC and manure they lived in by the garbage bags full. In this case he was able to start "over" feeding straight away, also because there was a very healthy worm population, so he reported. ""It was smelly and really wet. . "" smelly ... which means it got anaerobic because of too wet and the cardboard >> not enough oxygen.. It is a good thing you re-used the yucky newspaper because I am sure it is loaded with MO. You do need to put something over the grating so stuff won't just keep falling down, until it is finished VC. So, a few layers of newspaper should do it. Also newspaper soak up moisture more readily than a big piece of cardboard (shredded is different) on their smooth sides. And will soak through to the exposed bottom of the newspaper and evaporate (up to a certain amount). The leachate will usually come down along the walls of the FT. Good luck with your worms.

They had slices of Ambrosia apples for tasting at Kroger's here the other day, trying to promote it, as it was a featured product in the ad this week, $1.69 a lb iirc.

I was very underwhelmed by the slice I tasted, it wasn't even a good apple.

That being said, as you pointed out, Konrad, apples can vary a whole lot from orchard to orchard, tree to tree, or season to season. Then, in commercial channels, you also have to factor in the effects of storage and handling techniques. And, finally, everyone has their own taste preferences in things.

Probably, despite my tasting experience with one slice, I would say that under the right conditions, this could be a really good apple, since I think almost any variety has that potential. SOMEONE must have thought it special enough to grow it commercially, after all.

I just had my first Ambrosia apple also. It is sweet and crunchy with the perfect zing for eating out of hand! Personally I would love to be able to grow an apple like this. Albeit I have just started growing fruit trees, so maybe my tastebuds are too used to cardboard RD's. I have to say I'd rather Ambrosia to any of the Gala or Fuji or Pink Lady's I bought.

I've got one planted.
You know several years ago when they came out they were SO GOOD! But the last year or two the store boughts just didn't have that strange perfume. I figure it has to do with freshness but who knows.
Anyways- I can not wait till mine bears fruit.

where did u source your tree ? i tried getting 1 from van wells but they are sold only to licensed growers. retail growers are out of luck at this date.
they sure are a nice looking apple, hope i can grow some soon.
