Can I take Shadowturf plugs and transplant?

I'm in San Antonio, TX (hot hot hot, drought drought drought....)

Anyway, after a couple of years my small patch of shadow turf lawn has grown absolutely beautiful. The drought has had a little impact but not much. I have a much larger area that's planted with zoysia (doing moderately well in the shady spots, less so where it gets more sun), and other areas of dirt that are quite shaded.

Has anyone tried taking plugs from your own shadow turf and transplanting them elsewhere in your yard?

When's the best time of year to do it?

And how's the competition between shadow turf and Zoysia? I have an area that overlaps a bit,so far it seems both are strong in that zone with neither being dominant. I vastly prefer the shadow turf, and would love to see it take over.

Have I ever made plugs from Shadow Turf?
No I have not, but it is irrelevant as I have done so with SA, Zoysia, and Bermuda millions of times.

With that said plugs is not the way to go in your case, you want sprigs from the existing areas and would be a good spring time project for you next spring. Way to late right now to start this.

FWIW Shadow Turf is Zoysia.

Thanks, bboy. :) Unfortunately, I don't know that there are any nearby-- I've read about them mostly on the web, I can't tell what trees are what other than the ones I know, IRL. KWIM? (blushing over the message board = me). I usually buy my trees at a local place where the experts are very helpful, these I bought on more of a whim (though I'd wanted some for a while) at Lowe's, without talking to the guys who normally help w/ my tree info. There's almost nothing that isn't leafed out yet just from Winter's slumber, here, though. So that bodes poorly for the dogwoods? I have read that the dogwoods take a long time to 'wake up' after transplant, is why I was holding out hope. I'm sure raspberries are different-- but I know of all the raspberries I put in this early Spring, some leafed out right away, some took a month to start for some reason; and all were later to awaken than the raspberries that were already in my yard from last year. I'm hoping like with those, there's still reason to hope?

Wait, you have a plant, actually 2 plants, that are both known as incredibly invasive, your husband sensibly wants to battle them, and you want to spread them? How much do you hate this man? Let him battle the plants, he won't be finished for a long time, so you don't have to spread them. In other words, do nothing and you will still have both for a long time.

Just Google "Garden Insect Barrier" it is sold by many different seed and garden suppliers. Comes in a couple of different weights - Lite and Super-Lite depending on your climate. I use Super-Lite. You are quite right Floral that climate makes a difference in life span for harvesting and weather tolerance for them but the 200 days DTM indicates you wouldn't even get the first sprouts until 200 days after transplanting and that simply isn't accurate. Instead you can begin harvesting at about 115 days (+/-) 10 days and if the climate cooperates, continue to harvest for months. Igor is a good variety IMO, much better than Bubbles, but I'm not waiting most of a year to see my first sprouts develop. :-) Dave

How can coil fail ohm test, yet I can see spark plug spark?

I took a plug and bent the ground electrode pretty much straight upward. The spark still jumps the gap, but not going all the way to the tip of the electrode. Seems like it is jumping erratically to the left and closest part of the ground electrode. Thoughts?

What do you mean by sprigs vs plugs?

I wasn't planning to do it now, but didn't know when was best. I know ST is related to zoysia, but the texture is incredibly different and grows so thick compared to my zoysia. It's so soft and nice. I love it!

Depends on variety. Some like Diamond and Emerald are extremely soft and silky. Sounds like you might have Z-52 aka Meyers.

What do you mean by sprigs vs plugs?

Zoysia grass is very much like Bermuda as it reproduces by stolons (above ground) and rhizome (below ground) runners.

To make sprigs you simply rake the yard and pull up the stolon runners, and plant them. Rather than me telling you the process, just Google sprigging Bermuda or Zoysia.

To make plugs there are two ways:

1. Take sprigs and plant them in pots.
2. Cut sod, then chop them into 2 x 2 squares and plant them in pots.
