Overseed with KBG or Perennial Rye?? This Weekend!

Hi,

New to the forum but it's a wealth of info.

I built a house in June of last year (zip - 01543) and the lawn was hydroseeded by the builder. The builder also put down a seed blend that was 55.0% Annual Ryegrass, 24.0% Perennial Ryegrass, 10.0% Creeping Red Fescue, 6.0% Kentucky Bluegrass, 5.0% Chewings Fescue. I do not know the breakdown of the hydroseed.

I have a very sunny lot and want to slit seed this fall to add thickness and darken the grass. I usually cut it at 3.5" to 4". I can't start from scratch...

Most of what I've read suggests that KBG is the way to go for a nice dark color. However, I've read in various lawn forums that the ryegrass and fescue will prevent bluegrass from properly germinating. So, if it is going to grow in unevenly, at best, I don't mind overseeding with a perennial rye grass if there are some dark cultivars that you would suggest.

What is your experience with this and recommendation for lawn seed?
