With a larger deck, the White 54 should make the job go faster and it's good for mulching and side discharging. However, if you are considering one, the bagger is not so good. The Cub has the smaller deck, but the bagger is much better at picking up clippings. Adding fluid to the tires will improve traction, but adding weight and tackling a steep hill will put stress on the transmission. Be sure to change the fluid even though they are supposed to have non-servicable transaxles.

Let me say this: The people who designed those older Murrays must of had a wicked bent to their minds and psyche's! Oihh--such a beeziness! I replaced the rear drive belt on an old Montgomery Ward Lawn tractor. By the time i was finished, i was babbling incoherently! After i got my wits settled back down, i backed it out of the garage, and the front main drive belt went kablooie! It now reposes under a large tarp, waiting for dismantling for scrap! The engine, i will save, and some other parts! Then, early in the spring, the local Parks & Recreation brought their late model light duty lawn tractor in for belt replacement! Same deal, although, i could easily remove the whole rear fender assembly, and that helped immensely. No, it doesn't seem like he'll be spending a whole lot of time doing major ground-engagement, but pulling an aerator though solid clay (which will need to be significantly weighed down) is no slight task. Plus he has the typical good-enough-for-occupancy-inspection lawn, which probably won't be good enough for someone who cares enough about having a good lawn to consider buying a $3k mower, so he'll probably find himself moving some dirt around at some point in the next year or two. For that reason, I'd recommend a heavy duty lawn tractor (X304 or older LX) if not an all-out garden tractor. Vox, If you're concerned about jumping into a large purchase without really knowing what you need or what you're buying, then don't. You only have at most two months of mowing before the bermuda goes dormant. I don't know what kind of house you have, but with the house and driveway, you probably have less than 3/4 acre of actual grass to mow. It is possible to mow 3/4 acre with a push mower just to finish out the mowing season. That will leave you with all winter to research, or even browse eBay for a good deal. There is a feature on eBay where you can receive an email if an auction gets posted which fits specific criteria you've set. For example, you can search for a "John Deere," in "Home and Garden" / "Outdoor Power Equipment," from $500-2500, within 100 miles from your zip code. Then to really narrow it down, you can have eBay not alert you until a certain number of bids have been placed (say 5 or so) so you don't get bothered by items which are obviously overpriced. I'd save a few searches like that in "My eBay" and see what comes up over the next few months. Remember, with buying used, you can pretty much sell it without taking a loss if it doesn't fit your needs.

Heather, I have a Craftsman DSG 6500 garden tractor that I really like. This is a garden tractor as apposed to a lawn tractor so it is able to use "ground engaging" equipment. It has a 54" cutting deck. I put a Johnny Bucket attachment on the front of it which acts like a front end loader so that you can use it to plow, move dirt, compost, etc. I have the manual transmission but the auto is easier to use. I use it to haul either with the Johnny bucket on the front or I have a dumpable cart that I haul around. You mentioned that you'd like it for a bigger place some day so this tractor would do everything you want and more. The tractor is right around $2200.00 give or take and for another $1000.00 you can get a 2-stage snow blower for the front which should help with your weather. I purchased the 3 yr. at home service agreement that covers pretty well everything for about $300.00 but I've never had to use it. This tractor is made by Husquvarna. Bought the scoop attachment for scraping and hauling, works great on flat surface but the mower deck can cause some drag on uneven ground. Starts easy, runs great, but I wish the reverse had better response, it's rather slow for going back and forth with a scoop. To get the full engagement you need to pull up on the accelerator pedal rather than press down on the reverse pedal--no reasonable adjustment option available. I believe the belt broke because it wasn't properly set up at the store or the factory.Be sure if yout tractor has any problems go to store and make sure the service guy has the part .My problem is probly not the norm for this machine,I'm writting this to warn others incase it happens to them."
