Lawn Boy - model# 5265 engine removal

Hello,

I have an old 2cycle lawn boy model# 5265. I need to remove the engine from the deck as the deck has a crack. My specific problem is the blade mounting pad. I have no idea of how to pull it off. This is the only component that is stopping me from removing the engine. How is the pad removed? I have looked closely and have seen no 'key' or set screw holding it in place; I have heated the pad with propane, and flushed it with penetrating oil, followed by gentle tapping with a rubber mallet. I attached a puller to the plate, but again was unsuccessful, if anything the puller began to distort (by bending the plate inwards) the plate.

I'm at my wits end. I have googled away with no luck either. Any help would be appreciated, as I need to take the deck in to be welded by a pro - the machine has a magnesium deck that I am unable to weld at home.

Most of the time they can be removed by placing a brass drift on a corner and giving it a sharp smack with a 2lb attitude adjuster thereby spinning the adapter on the shaft. There is no key. If all else fails break the plate away from the hub then use a puller on the hub.The problem here is that the hub may be n.l.a.

Thanks for the info. Is it ok to heat the collar with acetylene ? (no to the point of cutting it off though). I'm reluctant to use it as I would hate to distort the crank...
In addition, using your 'attitude adjuster' lol, is there the possibility of damaging the bearing/seal(s) that the crank rests on?

I finally viewed the piston via the open exhaust ports and found much play and side to side movement of the piston within the cylinder. I don't recall seeing this in any of my other working Lawn-Boys, so I suspect severe damage to either the cylinder sleeve/liner or the piston. I replaced engine shaft seals and I swapped the carburetor and ignition pack and spark plug with known good replacements and still experiencing the same problem...Engine starts only when completely cold for 5 seconds and dies. Attempts to restart leave wet/raw gas on the spark plug. Spark checks out OK, so I suspect the side to side play of the piston as the cause of problem. I also checked the braking mechanism and on/off contacts and it is working normally. Please advise if any of you folks have experienced this problem and if it may be due to the piston with much side to side movement within the cylinder. Thanks for your help.

I guess you have a 10684 or 10683 'Insight'? The first thing to check is the mulch plate or bag installation. The heavy wire extension must be all the way down in the RH retaining slot on top of the discharge box. There should be no debris in the channel under the frame. Make sure the piece is snugged all the way down, because there is a magnetic switch under it which cuts off the ignition to prevent starting/running without anything covering the discharge port. If that's not it, look at the switch wire connection at the engine brake (the part that moves when you operate the engine/blade control bail). If that is a good, tight connection with no corrosion, it's probably okay. Now you'll have to remove the tank shroud and steel air shroud to get to the coil and flywheel. It has been reported that the magnet on the flywheel on a very few units has come loose, killing any magneto effect. Plus, you'll need to do this anyway to replace the CD pack (coil).

'can the seal be replaced by removing the engine from the deck and replaced without taking the engine apart?' Yes. If self-propelled, the pulley has to be taken off the crankshaft. I think you're kind of mixing up 4-cycles and 2-cycles a little bit. The seal on a 2-cycle can 'leak' fuel (actually the crankcase develops pressure every stroke and some fuel/oil is blown out) and still run fine, as there is no oil sump in the engine - it gets fresh oil every cycle, in the fuel. So, you don't have to replace the seals (one upper, one lower) until the engine doesn't run well enough to use. They all have some oil around the shaft - that's how the bearings and seals stay lubricated. Still, on a 1990 (probably an 'F' engine) it would be a good idea to replace the seals, just not critical if the engine still runs okay. On a 4-cycle, oil around the lower seal means you need to watch your oil level in the crankcase and replace the seal when it starts leaking enough oil to see on the dipstick.

The two holes need to be kept open. The upper one allowed oil which collects at the rear of the crankcase to reach and lubricate the bushing which will now be a needle bearing when you install it. Keep the other hole open also. Make sure the needle bearing when installed is below these two holes. By boring the remaining section of bushing .020 oversize the crankshaft will no longer touch and oil can reach the needle bearing through this space. The bottom end of the needle bearing with the bearing number should face out and be flush with the crankcase seal shoulder. Always press needle bearings from the numbered side.

I wouldn't use the acetalyne torch. Too hot. You will also melt the seals right above.

Heres a picture tutorial for this job. As you see in picture four, whack that sledge hard with the hammer on the right side and she will spin off many times.

If its really stubborn I have used a sawzall and CAREFULLY cut the darn things off. The driver is cheap, only a couple of bucks.

Hi Andrew, any luck getting this collar plate off?? I'm having the same problem on my LB 7263 and have tried everything including using an air chisel on the collar (had one gentleman tell me it worked for him) but no luck. I just gave the hammer technique a try - also to no avail.
Guess I'm gonna try cutting the plate off and using a gear puller to (hopefully) remove the collar, as one of your responders suggested.
If you have been able to succeed with your's, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know how you did it.
