B&S won't start

I recently overhauled my 14 hp ohv b&s engine....and now it won't turn over. It appears that I'm getting suction through the exhaust and and air expelling from the air filter..I'm sure the push rods are where they should be. Exhaust on top (steel rod), intake (aluminum rod) on the bottom. Could they be reversed? I appreciate your input.

You have them in the correct order. You could not reverse the push rods and make any difference anyway as far as starting is concerned. HOW did you adjust the valves?

I have detailed instructions for adjusting the valves IF you would like them.

Thank you...If you have details that would be most helpful. Is it possible the timing could be off as well? Or is that part of adjusting the valves also.

Well, I just finished mowing the lawn!! As my old troubleshooting instructor used to say...it's always something simple. I got my neighbor to help start the engine by pull starting while he fiddled with the throttle valve. No luck. He said that he thought something must be dragging; holding the engine speed down thereby killing it before it could get started. We checked everything we could think of and finally spotted a spot being rubbed by the drive belt. It's a Sarlo and practically identical to the big wheel Yazoo's. Now the belt was just barely rubbing. I couldn't feel a difference at all while starting, but it was obviously just enough. The engine still isn't easy to start, but at least it can be done now with 8-10 pulls. This tells me that it's marginal at best. I'm tempted to put a minor bend in the governor rod which would in effect, strengthen the spring. This should make the engine run somewhat faster. Any thoughts? Anyway, thanks to all of you who helped out. I now know my mower a whole lot better than before. Bob

917.289031 is the model number. Like I said in the original post, the engine is not the original but a replacement...just so you know. I just took the spark plug out and cranked it and that allowed the starter to spin the flywheel constantly. Exciting! What do you suggest?

If it will not jump start, you may likely have a loss of continuity in your battery cable connection points. Check, clean and tighten ALL places where your battery cables have an attaching bolt. Not JUST at the BATTERY. You gotta have good contact at the other ends of the cables too, both the ground and hot cable. Check and clean the cable that runs from the solenoid to the starter also. After cleaning and tightening the cable fasteners, try a jump start. If you lose continuity in the battery cables the battery will not charge either, so that may be why a dead battery. Tackle the battery by having it load tested at Uh Oh Zone or other auto parts center.

.051 is in mm= .020" You can get the Copper Champion plug or use the NGK as well. But, if it is not cold starting on 3 primes + 50 Fahrenheit- there are other issues. The basics: Clean fuel system, fresh fuel, verify a good fuel flow through the float valve, verify the intake seal, gasket and tube are not leaking, remove the flywheel nut and confirm the key is straight etc. If the prime quality itself seems lacking, replace the airbox gasket and the bowl seal. Use caution about using too much torque on the airbox screws or the flange will distort. In addition to all that, Briggs will tell you not to oil/ treat the pre-filter on these.

It is of course possible that you did not get the camshaft gear and the crankshaft valve timing gear positioned correctly.

bill_kapaun, was that a rhetorical question? Meaning was that obviously, as described, the the exhaust valve is opening on the intake stroke and the intake valve is opening on the exhaust stroke - something(the cam?) is backwards - hence the 'turned around 180''. That's what I figured when I "thought about it." But please if you know something I don't I am more than willing to learn, that's why I'm here.

Since the cam rotates at 1/2 the crank speed, the valves still open/close with the piston in the same portion of the stroke.

Ok, so then this cam has coresponding lobes at both 0' and 180' for one valve and some where in the neighborhgood of 90' and 270' for the other valve?

Not at those locations, but the point is-
IF the cam is 180 out, it will be in the proper position at the "other" piston TDC, or the transition between exhaust & intake strokes.
Since spark is controlled by the flywheel magnet, you get a spark every time the piston is at the Top position.
This isn't true in a car, since you only get a spark once every 2 crank revolutions. (at least the older ones)
Now, if the cam is out at some other position than 0 or 180, you'll have valve timing problems, but you specified 180.

Ok, well since I obviously don't know the inner design of this engine I guess I shouldn't have "specified 180'." The point I was trying to make was that the timing is obviously backwards - however many degrees that takes, sheesh.
