The Perfect Mulching Lawn Mower Doesn't Exist

I mow my grass to about 3 1/2" high with a knife-sharp blade when the weather gets warm. This is the main reason that my grass looks excellent by anyone's standards. I use a Honda mulching mower that does as good a job as any mower I have ever used. But there is still room for improvement. The Honda has the same problem as all other mowers when it comes to tall grass like mine. The higher you set the mower, the less ability it has to lift the grass. The wheels push the grass down and the mower's vacuum can't lift it up. I mow at different directions each time, which helps, but when mowing at the 3 1/2" setting, there is always grass in the wheel tracks that doesn't get cut. There is a huge difference in the lifting ability when you raise the mower that last 1/2", but there is also a huge difference in how well the lawn does in the warm weather. Given the choice of this problem or mowing shorter to eliminate the problem, I will live with the uncut grass because the lawn still looks much better overall. It seems like the only solutions would be to design a mower that has more lifting ability or place the wheels behind the mower so they only push down the grass that has already been cut. A reel mower almost fits the description, but they are not good for tall grass. Unfortunately, I still think the perfect mulching mower for tall grass is yet to be invented.

Right. And it will never exist, because in mulching mode there is no 'vacuum' to pull the grass up - you only get that when the air generated by the blade has someplace to go, either out the discharge chute or through the bag. This is why the cut can be a little ragged when mulching, as the air tends to blow the grass down under the deck. The other problem of less vacuum with a raised deck also cannot be solved although there have been some improvements like the Hi-Vac Snapper deck. I changed out mowers a few years ago so I would have 4" capability, but I found that the grass 'laid over' at that height instead of being cut. So, I never go above 3.5" now except in special cases, and always bagging or discharging.
The bottom line is that the rotary mower is good at discharging or bagging because the blade works as a fan to draw air in around the edges of the deck and blow it out the discharge. Once you close off the discharge for 'mulching', you lose this 'vacuum' and 'pulling up' of the grass blades to be cut.
The Honda HRX system of blending bagging and mulching is a good compromise in theory because it should give some of the air an escape which promotes a cleaner cut, but then it defeats to some extent the purpose of mulching, which is to eliminate bagging/discharge and return the chopped clippings to the ground.

I would think that should be self-evident and not worthy of even stating. I have yet to see perfection in any product!

When the mower is configured for mulching the only exit for air (and clippings) is closed off. Consequently the under-deck airflow is more turbulent and less directed upward and out. Open the grass chute and you have more or less constate upward pull on grass blades.

I've got my Toro Superrecycler at the highest setting when mulching. By overlapping cuts any grass missed on the first pass gets cut on the second. The mower delivers an evenly cut lawn with no windrows.

I just got a Cub Cadet CC550SP and it is a great mower. My yard looks much better after one cut. The suction on this mower is outstanding when using the bag. It's amazingly quiet and its the easiest thing to start. Starts on first pull EVERY TIME! Did not or would not ever buy from the big box stores. I did some comparison shopping and even though the models had same numbers the mowers had small differences. First being the wheels. Home depots mowers had these narrow hard plastic wheels and the one I got had 2" wide heavy duty wheels. At box store your new mower is sure to have loose bolts on it somewhere. At the store I bought mine, DEWYNNS in San Antonio Texas, they set up my new mower serviced it and step by step showed me all the features. Try finding someone at a box store who could even find where the lawnmowers are. In closing, don't rush out to lowest or home depot to try and save money. I spent the same amount of money at a store that just sells lawn equipment and the service was outstanding. I've bought a couple pieces of lawn equipment there and will only go there in the future.

Normally you would look at the old blade, get a number from it and order it online. Since the mower is a Troy-Bilt and was used when you got it, it may not have had the original blade. I made a mistake above - somehow I got it in my head that it was a Toro. You'll have to get the model number off the mower and look up a blade at one of the on-line vendors. Your mower was actually made by the MTD Corp. which owns that brand along with many others. Their site may be of some help in researching the blade. Now. With all that, the new blade you bought should still work. The main thing is to find out if its on right. If the starter pull cord comes off the right-hand side of the engine, the blade is said to turn 'clockwise'. When you pick up one side of the mower to work on it, keep this in mind, as it will be 'counter-clockwise' from underneath. BTW, always pick up the side with the air filter to keep oil from running into the intake tract. Disconnect the spark plug any time you put your hands under the deck to raise it up. Look at the blade and see if the sharp edge is pointing in the direction of rotation and the airfoil on the top of each blade end is 'up' toward the engine. Now check the blade for proper tightness - put the wrench on it while you block it at the bottom with a piece of wood under your foot. Look at the ends of the blade and see how close they are to the inside of the deck - should be about 1/4" clearance. The old blade was a mulching blade if it was the original, because you have a mulching mower. I still have not figured out why the self-propel went out at the same time as the blade change.

I guess I'm the Dad in this case! I do remember having an el cheapo power mower (person propelled) when I was a kid (red and perhaps Western Auto) and using it for everything - a field at the rear of the house comes to mind... one day it was 3 feet high, the next it was "lawn". Anyway, everyone is always dumping on Craftsman tools and power equipment. I'm still using my Craftsman Eager One, 5HP, Tecumseh engine, that I purchased in 1984. I don't recall it ever failing to start except when the switch I installed to replace the dead-man handle died. It smokes, uses oil, but still cuts better than my $500 Troy-Bilt. At the beginning of the summer, I ran over a rock and bent the blade so that it was actually digging into the ground. Had to replace the blade plate and blade, but didn't faze the crankshaft or the upper crankshaft shear pins. The only maintenance I've ever done is occasionally replace the air filter, less occasionally replace the spark plug (do clean it annually), and change the oil. I think it is coming to the end of its long life and really hate the thought of getting rid of it. It really needs a total engine rebuild (chassis, etc. is still fine - no rust but lots of scrapes), but I just don't have the abilities. JimC
