Crabgrass: Post-emergence spray, or not?

Hi, I'm a newbie home owner in Massachusetts learning something new about my lawn each week. This week it's crabgrass. Over the past few weeks, crab grass has sprung up and filled in a good part of my lawn and seems to be spreading (see pictures below). At this point I've read all the tips on *preventing* crab grass for next season, but what do I do now?

It's mid-summer, and I'm wondering what to do at this point. Do I let it run its course and use what I've learned to prevent it next season. Or is that asking for trouble? If the suggestion is to use post-emergence crabgrass killer, should I do it right away or after the summer heat?

My lawn is about 15,000 sq ft. About a third of it is crab grass free. Another third of it is really bad (shown in the picture) and the last third looks okay but I see small specs of bright green crab grass starting to sprout.
