St Augustine sod laid late March is dying

We laid some St Aug sodd the last weekend of March and the 1st weekend of April and some areas that were doing really well are now thinning out and dying. Especially a large area under 2 oak trees - we removed a lot of ferns and their roots from this area and it left nice black soil to put the sodd in and also a smaller area by our driveway that is in the full sun. It seemed to take really well but now it loks thinned out and kinda like the roots are exposed - like the soil may be washing away or something. Should we lightly put sand/black dirt over it? The only thing we did not do when we put it down was to roll it - would that make a difference at this point? Any advice is greatly appreciated (came from the North abt 7 mos ago and we had fescue lawns there).
