D-Series LawnBoy Coils

I have been told that I am the person of last resort whenever it comes to the old LawnBoy parts(50s&60s) and always try to provide parts for anybody trying to keep an old LawnBoy alive. However, I have been receiving a lot of requests for the coils on the D-Series Engines and after depleting my inventory down to three, I thought I would go on the hunt and see for myself. Well, all these stories I have been hearing about these coils being nowhere to be found, I have started to believe it. Where have they gone? Could it be some sort of government conspiracy, to make sure that the LawnBoy 2 cycle engine would be totally eliminated from this earth, or does someone have another possible answer? Maybe instead of buying stock, I should have been buying D-Series coils. Maybe they will become the next Gold Standard, at least among LawnBoy Owners.

I think I read on this forum before anyone replaces a coil, 1st do this step. Place the coil in a oven and bake the sucker at 200 degress for 20 minutes. I tried it on a dead lawnboy coil and it worked 8 weeks latter still working. Before I replace any coil I will do this 1st

i have a lb that has a bad coil. i dont know what model or series it is. the model is 10227 and serial is 6945916.is there a site i can go to and put these numbers in and it gives the specs on the mower?? can anyone help???

Your very lucky. Those are rare and very unique for that era. Have you tried RCPW? Its $58 which is high to me. I get alot of used stuff so look around for any D-400 coil, it will work. Good luck. Here is a link that might be useful: rcpw

I finally viewed the piston via the open exhaust ports and found much play and side to side movement of the piston within the cylinder. I don't recall seeing this in any of my other working Lawn-Boys, so I suspect severe damage to either the cylinder sleeve/liner or the piston. I replaced engine shaft seals and I swapped the carburetor and ignition pack and spark plug with known good replacements and still experiencing the same problem...Engine starts only when completely cold for 5 seconds and dies. Attempts to restart leave wet/raw gas on the spark plug. Spark checks out OK, so I suspect the side to side play of the piston as the cause of problem. I also checked the braking mechanism and on/off contacts and it is working normally. Please advise if any of you folks have experienced this problem and if it may be due to the piston with much side to side movement within the cylinder. Thanks for your help.

"99-2911 99-2916 92-1152 684048 all will work on Duraforce" I am confused a bit...when I look at the RCWP website...they link 99-2916, 92-1152, 684048, and 684049 together as superseded/current parts and the cost is $38.78. And 99-2911 is listed alone and not linked to other parts and lists for $32.43. And 99-2911 is the part number for all my later model Duraforces. Are we still saying all are the same? Can one save money and go with 99-2911 for all year Duraforces?? Could the older models be better made than the 99-2911?

Bill, Several original D series parts are getting scarce, the coil being one. C coils are actually easier to find since they were used on other engines. I don't know of any other engine that used the D style coil,do you? Of course it's rare to see a D coil fail. I think the Taiwan aftermarket version is still available.

Try Foley Belaw for lawnboy coils.

look under ignition parts for lawnboy coils. They have several.

Where would I find the Taiwan aftermarket version? I tried the Foley Belsaw site suggested by gigal mo, but drew a blank there.

I doubt very much if there is an after market source anywhere for that coil.

I suggest all of you start scouring junk yards and mower bone yards to save, salvage any remaining ones of these.

I might point out that failure of this coil is very unusual. Generally it is the condenser, sometimes the points.

As usual, Walt brings his wisdom to the table. There have been numerous times I have had an engine without spark, and the first thing you think of is the coil. Many times after replacing the coil I would still not have spark, until I replaced the points and condenser. Then I would go back and replace the new coil with the old one, and much to my surprise, in a lot of cases, I still had spark.
