Chinese Engine Toros Any Good?
Comments (11)The 'Variable-Speed' drive is a manual-control version of 'Personal Pace' and my favorite mower drive. The solid rear axle is driven, which propels both drive wheels. The axle ends most likely have the typical enclosed ratchet that allows pulling back and easier turning (when the drive bail is released). Normally you hold the drive bail all the way to the handle, but you can 'feather' it for slower speed around obstacles. I would not expect any hand throttle or choke on this model which most likely would be primer-start or automatic choke. I believe this would be a red-painted version of the Lawn-Boy 10641, the same size and features but may not be available anymore as they are phasing out the green mowers. I haven't heard any bad news about the Chinese engines. Probably it will do fine with proper care. At the price, I might try to get a B&S engine if possible, but this mower design works very well, being an offshoot of the LB 'Insight' hi-dome deck design. Comments (12)IMHO changing the oil on an hour basis regardless of how it "looks" is important. The OEM does not come up with these hourly change numbers by using a dartboard. Keep in mind with 20/20 vision you cannot see particles less than 40um (contrasting no less) without magnification. Even on units with an oil filter, they are rated at 20 or 25um and particles less than that size cruise through the filter unless they get hung up as the filter clogs. Worse, oddly shaped particles say 15um wide, and 35um long (like a spear) can pass through a 25-20um filter. Changing the oil (when warm after the particles have been stirred up into suspension) is the only way to rid the engine of them other than flushing the case. These small particles crash into parts and make more small particles, or some larger ones too, and the cycle only ends the day the engine stops running for good. Keeping the oil changed at the recommended interval rids the case of the majority of the particle population so you have fewer projectiles in there with fresh oil. In hydraulic systems we deal with this another way as it would be impractical to drain a 1,500 gallon industrial reservoir on a regular basis. The use of 10um, 5um, or 2um filters (incidentally a 10um filter would remove all the red blood cells in your blood, and a 5um would strip the white cells out leaving you only with plasma, so these are FINE filters and not the one on a Briggs engine.) and occasional external purification by use of a purifier unit keeps the oil dry (water removal) and clean. Since it would be impractical for the average homeowner to own an oil purification unit (the good ones start at $22k) and reprocess the used oil with new additives, changing it regularly is the best line of defense. After a season (25 hours) I am sure there is more than 300ppm of water in the oil, not to mention gas too....See Moretoro riding lawn mower - 8+32/belt replacement and upkeep!
Comments (11)5/24/07 Hi Guys! Thanks for all the help. Sorry I used my Ebay handle here "RCS14420" instead of my handle and nick name Tbone123. Don't want to confuse anyone. I like this site and have contributed to others as well. I've learned a lot of great stuff on several issues and events from trial and errors over the years as well as posting from others here. I will follow up on the link correction and get back to you. Thanks to all. Have a great Memorial Day; let us not forget what it is for and why. God bless America and the Veterans who have given their lives to make us free! Tbone123 and/or RCS14420....See MoreToro 6.5 HP with Tecumseh engine problem
Comments (24)Tie the bail wire to the handlebars, the one that applies the engine brake. Leave it tied there until the flywheel is back on and torqued down. Remove the flywheel and disconnect the spark plug wire. That's a picture of the breather. You DO NOT want to damage the breather itself. Prying it out of the engine can easily damage the breather. Use a screwdriver to pry the seal out of the engine and carefully separate the breather from the seal. You may want to cut it out surgically with a razor blade. I have only seen ONE of these seals leak and that was on a mower about 20 years old. If there is no oil leak, DO NOT remove the breather. They last for the lifetime of the motor....See Moretarheelman
