I've been fighting this too for 4 years now. Actually I've had it for a long time and the patch was was just getting bigger and bigger. I should have sprayed it 12 years ago when I first spotted it. Control in the past consisted of roundup and then reseeding. However I would have mixed results. I would get patches of it growing here and there. I'm about 60 percent done now, but like some of you the seed keeps coming back. This year I've tried something else. I've dug up some sprayed stuff and laid sod but man that's just too much work so I took a weed burner and have burned anything yellow. I'll keep some fertilizer on the burned spots and keep spraying and burning it till fall then using a small rototiller, till my soil and mix a bunch of seen and starter bed stuff together and replant the bare spots again. Hoping this is the last of it.

Creeping fescue may be great for some areas and/or desired types of lawn, but I have concerns about mine. I like nice tall, single-blade grasses but I have something that has invaded that turns my lawn into a mat of grass that is all interconnected at the roots. It takes over entire portions of my lawn, and while green in the summer, it dies and turns brown all winter and early spring. Hard to get rid of too. I'm trying to eliminate this creeping grass, and beginning to wonder if I didn't introduce it myself through seeding. Not sure if this is bermuda grass, centipede grass or creeping fescue. Photos would be helpful. And tips on how to get rid of whatever it is. Lots of interconnecting roots..... Thanks!!!

Yes, Bermuda hates shade, but even if you plant that tree, the Bermuda grass just heads on out towards the sun. "SurPRIZE!" It says. I have it here. Every now and then I launch a new attack. Every then and now I come back to my senses. Only to launch another, some months or years later. I do believe that newspaper and/or cardboard, covered with mulch to keep it in place, will work over time. But you have to cover the whole lot. The WHOLE lot. I have covered some, and did this over Winter, so the Burmuda grass thanked me for buffering it from the frost. What was I thinking? Cold doesn't kill it, it just goes turns beige and goes dormant. Heat doesn't kill it. Nor drought. Digging it up and leaving it in the sun for an aeon won't kill it. I hear that composting it kills it, but I would need to see that to really, truly believe it. If you were to grow six foot shrubs over your entire block, that would probably kill it. And live among a short forest. That might be my next plan.

I live in San Fran Bay Area. I seeded the bulk on 3/4, some more on 4/8, and then my husband dumped a bunch of seeds on 5/2. You'll see the blue shells from the 5/2 seeding, but the thin sprouts are probably mostly coming from the 4/8 seeding. I'm pretty sure the old grass is fescue - I think it's the most common sod put down around here, and is how our house "came" when we bought it. I'm not saying it "spread" - I know fescue is a bunch type grass and doesn't send out runners like bermuda (my nemesis, which is we have these patches :-( ). It's that the edge of bunches flatten out/splay because there's nothing to the side of it. Here are a couple of pictures of increasing levels of zoom.
