Looking For Opinions On Red Fleshed Apples

I am wanting opinions on your favorite red fleshed apples and why. My primary use will be for pies and I want it to hold its shape after cooking. Sweet/tart flavoring would be great too, especially if also has dessert quality. I want it to ripen mid September or later (up until mid-October). So far I'm wondering about Pink Pearl, Hidden Rose, Pink Pearmain, Kiedzwetzyana and Pink Princess.

I already have the following apples growing: Chehalis, Honeycrisp, Karmijn de Sonnaville (my fav), Sweet 16. Bench grafted and whips are: Holstein, Alkemene, Lord Lambourne, Kandil Sinap and Ashmead's Kernal. I plan to add Newtown Pippin, Northern Spy and possibly Freiherr Von Berlepsch this year.

Hope you get some feedback from folks in the PNW. Here in the hot, humid south, the ones I've grown are garbage - and I was warned in advance by a knowledgeable orchardist that they would be. YMMV

Pink Pearl was a fireblight magnet - I don't think it ever produced a fruit before succumbing to a massive strike.
A tree purchased as Thornberry I'm convinced came mislabeled - small yellow apple with no hint of red/pink anywhere. Ever.
Winter Red Flesh, Geneva Crab, Giant Russian crab are all only good for making jelly - beautiful trees, but astringent fruits without enough flavor to make them worth eating.
Almata is decent, but not all that big, even for an edible crab, and a shy bearer at that.

I have a Pink Pearl tree. It's not a fall apple at all, in fact, it's one of the very first to ripen, late July-early August here. The fruit is very small, really more of a crabapple size. Even thinned it doesn't get very big. The quality is actually very good, and it makes nicely colored cooked products like pies, cakes, etc. As is typical of most summer apples, it doesn't store well at all, a few weeks in the fridge at best before it gets dry and spongy -- better to process right away in my opinion.

Orchard fruits always need to be chosen for regional suitability. Scab is not as prevalent in all areas as it is here on the Pacific Slope. The red flesh of varieties like this comes from Rosybloom crabapple parentage. Scab susceptibility is liable to have come from this half of the cross also, although many orchard apples are scab susceptible as well.

Thanks, all, for your comments. I keep looking at different nursery websites, and keep finding MORE kinds that sound interesting. The first list came from Raintree and Stark's. I wish I had room for 50 trees, but I'll have to narrow it down a bit. Funny story, though, about 'Pristine' -- I actually had a small tree of this variety about 6 or 7 years ago. It had been in the ground about 18 months and was doing well. I had it near, but not directly under, some power lines. One day, I had the dog out in the yard, and a mourning dove perched on the power lines. When the dog saw a bird or squirrel in a tree, he used to get mad and bite the tree trunk. Well, this time, he bit into and broke off the entire tree! End of Pristine apple. I have a different dog now, that one died of cancer a couple of years ago, and this one doesn't blame the tree for not being able to reach the squirrel.

Thanks for the help soeur, carol23, jahness and karyn1! Looks like we all agree on one thing - It looks like a cashew nut only a lot smaller. There are some cashew trees in the area where I found it but I only saw one of this tree. What's more, we have been going to the area regularly for more than 3 years now but I have never seen it produce seeds until today. Which explains why I am so thrilled. I will research on Sapindeae and the family of the cashew nut. Hopefully I'll get some progress. Karyn1, thank you for the link. It really might be helpful! I haven't tried cracking the seed open though, but I might try it as soon as i get the chance to. Thanks! I will update as soon as I figure it out!

Thanks much for all your responses! How right, it's December, how can I expect an apple to taste as fresh as if it were just picked off a tree? Although it did have crispness, just that odd streaking (and me and dh thought that the apple might have been exposed to freezing temperatures, but then you'd think it's flesh around the exterior would be mushy?) I've had Gala, and enjoyed them without complaint, and will try some of the other suggestions. Must be location, but I've never seen a honeycrisp in local grocers, just as in the other thread LindaC began with the rd, the Northern Spy apple is not available here either. A girlfriend was giving me her apple crisp recipe (she was from Ontario) and insisted I use Northern Spy for it, until she lived here a while and noticed it was not available. I can be more adventurous, but like beantheredunthat pointed out, dh's (or mine anyway) are more picky. I'll let him tough it out - he can go to the store and pick out his own apples and then complain to himself that there's something wrong with them!

Denninmi I like the Pink Pearl. Since I don't have an early apple I should grow one.

Jean I am a member of HOS. I was able to attend the recent tasting festival and got to try Pink Pearl and Niedzwetzkyana which got me thinking .... I love the club and their forum too.

I like that these apples seem to contain more of the antioxidants called anthrocyanins. I found this interested bit on the subject:

I loved Hidden rose it ripens around then nice and tart with lots of hidden spice and sweet flavors. Pink pearmain is another fine choice i liked it almost as much as hidden rose. They both would work well. Newtown pippin, karmijn,kandil,ashmeads,norhtern spy Hmmm yummmmm i love them all so worth growing all you can. We had great crops of all the above fruits except hidden rose wich is a third year tree we got two exceptional fruits off of this year.
I recently tasted several pink fleshed apples as well as 72 other ones at a CRFG fruit tasting in santa cruz one i liked was christmas pink it was a little sweeter than the others you mentioned with still a a lot of tart notes for cooking. Thank Albert etter and all his wonderful creations for some of those tasty pink fleshed Apples.
Grenadine is another one that stands out in my mind too.
I think i rank northern spy one up from karmijn although i love them both and they dont ripen at the same time. I love planning an orchard according to ripening so you can have tree ripe fresh fruit for a long season from june july to december and january. good luck with your choice

Our very first apple, and the only apple this year, from our BYO started in 2008 was a Hidden Rose on M7 from One Green World. We found it outstanding; we each had a little bite.
