Which apple variety would you recommend?

I have a honeycrisp and need a pollinator. I was thinking Gala or Fuji. I like gala because...

It's early ripening time most sources say (mid aug - early sept). And its sweetness and crispness.

I like fuji because its sweetness and crisp, but also I heard it keeps well, into april even!

Does this information on these 2 varieties ring true? I would also like to know which of these are a more disease resistant tree? I will be getting honeycrisp apples in october right? So it would be nice to get other apples at a differnt time. This would be the gala, but it could also be the fuji (being that it keeps so well into the winter months. Thanks for any advice you can offer. marnie

My inclination in a 5b climate would be Gala, since Fuji is a later ripening apple that may not quite make it in your short growing season. But there are Fujis and there are Fujis, and some of the sports now available ripen two weeks or more earlier than the original type. The best info on these varieties would come from a professional grower like Geraldo in WA, who actually understands the differences among them. I know there is one called Auvil Fuji that is earlier, and there are no doubt others. One that sticks in my mind is September something-or-other.

I have both Fuji (an old original type, Nagafu #6) here, and also one of the older strains of Gala (Royal Gala). The Fuji is a marvelous keeper, but much also depends on the conditions in which it (or any other apple) is kept. If you have a spare refrigerator in your basement, and bag your apples to retain some humidity in the refrigerated environment, you can indeed keep them into March or even longer. But they won't keep that long in a basket, even in a cool basement.

Do a little research by visiting nursery websites and see if you can find the different cultivars of these apple varieties that are now available. You might find something you like, and you would certainly add to your knowledge.

It is always helpful to include your actual location in a question of this nature. Usually, that will get you better and more focused responses.

As far as I can tell, the lighter color pomegranates (color of the arils, not color of the peel) are less strongly "pomegranate-flavored." I know the first two you listed have almost white arils; a google search tells me Utah Sweet probably has pink arils. Austin apparently has red to dark red arils. If you want a traditional strong pomegranate flavor like 'Wonderful' that may be your only option (or try a different nursery). [Personal bias: I don't like 'Wonderful' myself. I like light red ones]

Since you are in central virginia, it may be a good idea to check out central Virginia nurseries instead of a California one. In this area we have lots of cedar trees, so a key to selection is avoiding anything that is susceptible to cedar apple rust. I've used Edible Landscaping (http://ediblelandscaping.com/) and there are several other good apple suppliers here in Virginia. For my home orchard, I want high disease resistance and varieties insects are more likely to leave alone. I chose an Arkansas Black because I've had some experience knowing that Blacks are not as attractive to insects. My second is a Liberty - highly disease resistant. Don't know that I have space for anything else.

Hermie, If you do check out Lowe's, keep in mind all stores are not equal with their selection or care. I have one in particular that I like and know that they get there plants in on Thursday (I asked). WTS, I've gone and found nothing in the way of hoyas. Other times, I might walk out with 2, 3 or 4. You may be able to get them to request a particular variety for you. I've never done it as I like the "hunt". I think Teisa is right. This is a good time of year to be searching. Oh, and don't turn down a Lacunosa if you see one. It's one of the easiest to bloom and smells divine. One more thing, if you go ahunting while it's still cold, take along a paper bag or two. Hoya carnosa is a tough plant and should do well in bright light, it can stand going dry every now and then without problems. Hoya gracilis is now called Hoya memoria and is from the Philippines. This Hoya along with Hoya sp. Haraku will both do well in bright light but they will need slightly more water than Hoya carnosa and to stay in smaller pots. If you are starting with cuttings don't use more than a four inch pot of potting soil mixed with perlite or pumice and some small orchid bark if you can find it. You can grow your plants outside as long as there is no chance of frost but I would aim for 10 degrees Celsius as the low, any lower and you could risk loosing the plants. You picked some very nice Hoya species and I think you will do well with them and see many flowers. Mike
