I would say lacunosa. I have 10 umbels on my plant at the moment and the room smells heavenly in the evening.

I agree with Sandy. I already had three Lacunosas and I bought 5 more yesterday just because they are my absolute favorites in regards to smell and blooming habits. If you put Lacunosa in a light spot it flowers almost all year around and the blooms smell like paradise.

Are all of your lacunosa's the same, or are they different?

Well the store where I buy them only have them labeled as Lacunosa but I assume they are the most common variety and yes they are all the same kind. I just can't get enough of my Lacunosas:)

I'm a big fan of lacunosa's too. I'm not too sure which one I have, but it sure is a big bloomer. Bloomed right through the winter, and has over 19 umbels either open or coming. Such a lovely scent. I like the small size too as my house is so small. Would love to get my hands on 'Tove', but it's so expensive to get them in Canada.

I would say my H. shephardii. I love the overpowering fragrance at night, almost like the tropics ;) It is the only hoya I can get to rebloom. Lacunosa does not do well here as it's too hot in the summer, and too cold in the winter.

I second Hoya shephardii because it is an interesting looking Hoya and flowers well if you can give it a period of cool nights for part of the year. My plant does not get cool enough temperatures to flower heavily but it can fill a room with scent from just a few flowers. This species produces many peduncles so it has the ability to flower with many groups of blooms.

I really like many of the Acanthostemma section Hoyas like Hoya DS-70, burtoniae, heuschkeliana, memoria and wayetii, all are easy to grow and flower well. The scent of the blooms reminds me of buttery caramel.

I chose Hoya acuta for the scent of the flowers and it has proven to be a good grower. My plant is already about five feet long from the cutting stage last spring, no peduncles yet though.

Hoya obscura is easy one to grow & bloom.
Smells really nice too but mine crashed due to too much sun. I started the plants over, it was flowering as cutting and the sun drenched leaves are beautiful as long as not too much sun.
My favorite smelling hoya is subcalva, smells like welch's grape juice. Some people said it's hard to grow but mine are doing well & flowers 2x year.

I'm going to have to go for good old carnosa. This one flowers every year for me and is very reliable, and it smells so good too.

You guys are so lucky with lacunosa - for some reason it really doesn't like growing in the UK, and in the end I've had to put it on my heat mat in a baggie for it to grow and live. But now it does seem to be growing. I'm still not sure whether I should just give up and sell the stupid thing!!

Hmmm. Maybe I should try shepherdii, sounds like it might do well under my conditions.

I agree with the lacunosa. The size, habit and lovely perfume has me hooked. Mine has bloomed non-stop since last fall. I also have a young/small Iris Marie. Can't wait until it blooms!

hi people.i am a new greek fan of hoyas.i bought from a site a hoya kerri but i couldnt stop from buying 3 other types.one hoya carnosa,one gracilis and one haraku.i have no idea what they need (outdoor,indoors etc).of course i ll search the web.i have a garden..i recently started to buy flowers..it is becoming very beautiful.i need yr instructions.do these plants need sun?are they outdoor plants?thanks

Hi Evito welcome to the forum.

For starters can I ask what type of climate you are gardening in? Several of the forum members grow Hoyas outside on trees but most of us grow indoors in regular household conditions. Most Hoyas grow well in Eastern or Southern exposures, some need to be shaded others like it very bright. If you have a couple of windows I am sure you can grow and flower your Hoyas, some even flower in North facing windows. You can also add supplemental lighting using fluorescent lights if need be.

i am from Greece (europe)in Athens.I have a garden with spots with light but no sun (a few places have direct sunlight).Indoor i have a huge window with direct light but no sun and the house has a little bit of humidity (an old one).Generally the weather is warm,especially in summer time of course but inside my house in summer the temperature is quite good without air condition.
Further above,my question is the 3 types of hoya i mentioned are for indoors or ourdoors?do they need sun or only light?what type of soil is suitable?

Hoya carnosa is a tough plant and should do well in bright light, it can stand going dry every now and then without problems. Hoya gracilis is now called Hoya memoria and is from the Philippines. This Hoya along with Hoya sp. Haraku will both do well in bright light but they will need slightly more water than Hoya carnosa and to stay in smaller pots. If you are starting with cuttings don't use more than a four inch pot of potting soil mixed with perlite or pumice and some small orchid bark if you can find it. You can grow your plants outside as long as there is no chance of frost but I would aim for 10 degrees Celsius as the low, any lower and you could risk loosing the plants. You picked some very nice Hoya species and I think you will do well with them and see many flowers.
