with, well water & my warden won't like me use roundup pro

i want to renovate my 1.5 acre property starting in july. because we have well water and 2 daughters, my wife has nixed my tractor sprayer application idea.

are there any products that will take out my 70% weed lawn . . . ORGANICALLY? the weeds and the old lawn have to go. will replant turftypetall fescue &10% kbg

i need to re-educate myself regarding my onetime favorite arena. any help, advice or educational direction is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance for any and all responses.

Round up or glyphosate is one of the least toxic herbicde out there. The only other option would be to cover your lawn in clear plastic, let the sun burn it out, then sod.

There are some all natural herbicides you can use to kill the weeds and grass before you renovate your yard. I have never used them, and not sure how well they work, but it should satisfy the warden. Botanicalbill is correct though, glyphosate is very safe and essentially nontoxic, plus it results in total kill.

I do spray for spider mites on my indoor minis but Avid can be quite expensive. A good control is not misting, which doesn't do a thing, but wrapping a paper towel around the base of the plant to keep the dirt in, inverting the plant in the kitchen sink and spraying the underside of the leaves with a good cold spray from that hose spray I've never found any other use for. If you do that twice a week, spider mite will be a thing of the past. I use Avid because I have big roses inside and turning them upside down is nothing I could manage. It's very common for the leaves to turn yellow and drop when you first get a potted mini. They've been forced in a greenhouse and the change to dry air and lower light levels is enough to shock them. They should leaf out again and do fine thereafter. They sure aren't the easiest house plants in the world but I've got ten of them inside, several blooming right now and they're doing fine.

Oooh, a closet is already there? What if you split the difference---27" or 30" deep counters, and then pick up the extra on the other side, if it's just a matter of taking drywall down? (You could even save that project for some future time and just know the space was there, too.) 35" seems a little deep, but there are many people around here who seem to like 27" or 30" counters, especially if you have appliances on them. You do need to make the uppers deeper or pull them forward, though---it would be hard to reach a standard depth upper with a deep counter.

A not so "subtlety" I've noticed with the weird weather this "winter," is that my honeybees have been foraging most of it!! "Normally," winter comes, they kind of shut down and stay in the hives except for cleansing flights (bathroom). Not doing a lot of flying/foraging, the resources they have to take them until spring are adequate. This year, hives that had very adequate resources based on weight of the honey in the hive are getting significantly depleted. I started supplemental feeding late last month. "Typically," when bees forage, they bring back nectar, pollen and water to add to hive resources. In winter on warm days they forage aggressively but find nothing, but return to the hive very hungry and use up needed resources. I'm very afraid that we'll have some real winter toward the end leaving unfed hives to starve or, at best, have inadequate resources and populatrions to build up for the spring nectar flow. Bees were having enough problems without this.

Not to belabor and perhaps it is a function of my slack housekeeping skills, but I did not find the need to wipe down the tub in my tub/shower combination every time I showered. The tub in a wet room setting would receive far less of a deluge of skin etc than the tub I was actually standing in. In terms of "scum", most people at this point take the precaution of using liquid shower soap since it is bar soap that causes scum. I have tiles in my shower and I don't wipe them down every time I shower - nor do I wipe down the floor - my Showerguard shower door - the marble curb nor the marble bench. I hose them down with the hand held before exiting in the event there is any noticeable blobs of shampoo or conditioner. I just don't understand how a tub would become such a pestilence of debris - if I rinsed it off - if necessary - with the hand held it would dry just as my.current walk in shower does - which has marble bench, floor, glass frameless enclosure and 3" x 6" tile. Why would there be a need to clean and/or otherwise physically tend to a tub in a wet room environment versus a tub out in the open. Presumably when one cleans the bathroom, the tub out in the open needs to be cleaned just other items in a household need to be cleaned for other than hygienic reasons just because they become dusty and dirty from what is floating in the air.

I feel sorry for you. Your warden is simply nullifying each and every scientific advance made in the last hundred years in one fell swoop. You can't argue the point. None of the "organic" solutions are going to work as well as the scientific kind.

20% horticultural vinegar (AKA "burnout", I think)? You don't want to be spraying that stuff without a full hazmat suit and self-contained air supply.

Give the warden the MSDS for any organic herbicide you can find that has the killing ability of glyphosate, along with the one for glyphosate, and she'll see there IS NO DIFFERENCE IN SAFETY. If it's gonna KILL PLANTS, it needs to be used with respect.

The organic weedkiller is vinegar, but it is less safe than roundup - especially on a large scale.

As a practical matter, your best option for you timescale is just to lower the mower to the the lowest setting and chop the heck out of the yard for the next month. Mow at least twice a week. If mother nature cooperates with some hot, dry summer weather, you'll get a decent kill. If you have persistent patches, you can cut them down with a string trimmer or spot treat with chemicals.

I don't think you need the 20% vinegar. I've had success with household vinegar. (Buy gallon size from BJ's / Costco.)

What you do need with vinegar is direct and warm sunlight - 80 or above. I've sprayed in the morning when it was around 65-70, and the weed was still standing around lunch time. I sprayed it again in the heat of the day, and it was crispy in 20 minutes. Vinegar will give you top kill - it won't completely kill persistent weeds likes violet or deep rooted dandelions, but unless you're going for perfection, you can always spot spray with a herbicide once the new lawn is established (which the Boss may approve of vs. spraying the whole yard).

You can also try plastic sheeting, and bake them that way - but that's a lot of plastic (how much petroleum went into making 1.5 acres of plastic vs. 1 qt. of glysophate?

Oh - what you don't want to do is till - you'll bring up old (and still viable) weed seeds, plus you may just end up with a bumpy lawn if the lawn is not properly graded afterwards.
