Nodding plate flower and a WIP

I replaced the plate flowers that the GEii had failed on the pipe elbows with other. I figure they will make it through the winter then I'll check the ge ii. One of them is this bell flower shaped one. I'd like to make more this shape and figure out how to have them all on one stem.

When I made some concrete objects recently, I made 2 mushroom stems. I had gotten some little plastic toy cheerleading cheer cones at Family Dollar I thought the shape was perfect for mushroom stems. I stood them up in a bucket with a little mulch in the bottom.and put a 9 inch nail down the middle with the head of the nail sticking into the mulch so it would stick above the stem, and the pointy part sticking out of the bottom (which was facing up when I put in the concrete) of the stem to stick it into the ground. Here is a pic of the plastic cone, and two stems, one with a little button cap just stuck on it to give you an idea. I also carved lines into the stems to make them more realistic. I've got something to use to make caps and plan to do so next week.

The flower looks very cool. Nice take on the usual plate flower. And who would have thought cheerleading cones would make good mushroom stems? Not me! lol! I can't wait to see all your mushrooms when you are finished. I bet they will be great!

Here we go again. That is why I love this forum. Not a day goes by but there is a member that has came up with a new way or new use for something. Kathy this is a great idea AND the flower is so pretty. TFS

Thanks for the photo and the info. I looked at PVC pipe. It felt a little flexible so I was afraid it wouldn't hold up well with heavy flowers. I used dowel on one of the smaller flowers. Just experimenting right now. I've used copper and I've used galvanized pipe. I've been using GE silicone for windows and doors mostly, but once in awhile it doesn't seem to want to thoroughly. In that case I do it over with an epoxy. I'm also in the Pacific NW (will it EVER quit raining?). Maybe I'll try liquid nails.

Thanks everyone! Ya'll are so sweet. Personally, I'm not crazy about it - but the succ looks good in it so I'm keeping it HA! Janester... you're the one who inspired me to get the bricks!! Mermaid, Nicethyme and Slow, Thanks so much! I'd pretty much only nipped a center out of a plate before, but I found that even that's addictive. (like all the rest of masaicing...grin) Well, actually, I HAVE trimmed some of that white off that set of plates before for houses too. The plates were a garage sale find when I first started doing the birdhouses 2 years ago. She wanted $25.00 for them, so I LEFT THEM THERE! Can you believe it? I shopped all day worrying after them and went back in the afternoon and they were still there! I got the whole lot for $10.00. Slow, my best resource for plates is the biggest Goodwill in Sacramento. I think when you find a big enough store in an old enough town, you're going to have more luck happening into good stuff. For one, more things come in there, and second, turnover is better so you're always seeing new things when you go in. If I'd have known that I'd want to nip leaves someday, I would'a had a lot more interesting green plates. Since we live a long way out from there now, I don't get there much any more, but I'll get to go next week! Thanks again for your fun and inspiring comments! I had already made the "new" plate flowers some time ago including the bell flower one pictured here, otherwise I would have tried the new spoon back method.

That nodder is adorable, looks like a daffidil. So are the mushrooms. I need to get off this glass kick and try something else, those might be it.

I love the nodding flowers too. That is a good way to use the shades from the lights on the ceiling fans. I see lots of those at garage sales!!
Would you please give us a little more instruction on how to make the nodding flowers?? Thanks!

The nodding flower is just like any other plate flower, except the base is a small plate with a vase attached to it. I also put a blue glass glob in the center (that is the bottom of the vase). I used two plumbing elbows that were both less than 90 degrees curve to give it a gentle downward angle. I think that the new spoon method would work well because you could just bend the spoon handle.
