Pickle Jar Totem

OK I am doing what my GD says her generation is into, Recycling! Old plates, Pickle Jars, Napkin rings, wine glass and Glass Birdies. Where do you think it looks best next to Bottle Tree or Next to Milk Can? Thanks for helping!

Very creative! I like it next to that old milk can the best. Is everything glued together, holes drilled and a dowel used or some other way? Sure is inventive.

Thanks! everything is glued together, no drilled holes, no dowel just resting on the first plate which I will cover with soil to hold steady. This seems to work so far!

You are so right Kudzu!!!! We moved here to avoid land maintainance work (I had just had back surgery). We have alleyways behind each row of houses too. We get waves and Howdy's from the back neighbors everytime we are back there. We hear their BBQ's and they hear our skill saw. LOL The builders compensated by building a large number of parks, lakes, pavillions, community club centers, trails, 2 dog parks, Outdoor BBQ Kitchen, two concrete water parks, exercise gym, dance studio ect. That was supposed to keep people's live music in the parks. And we indeed have several live concerts each year. It is a cool concept but in the summer I have to hear everyone,s lawnmower, weedeater, radio in the garage, car doors ect... The good noise that I do not mind is that I can stand on my porch and hear a local farms donkey throwing a fit. That always makes me and Hubs smile. We also keep watch on the horses and cattle all around as we drive the perimeter of the neighborhood. One day during a drought a local crop field burned (sparks from a 4-wheeler) and we could hear coyotes howling that night. They ate one of our swans at the entrance pond. We are a small town That was designed and built all at once out in the middle of the country. I do not get to take a walk and cut branches or vines to use in crafts. : ( I dont get to bring rocks home from the lake or pick the flowers. Even our Bass are "catch and release"!!! So I miss that aspect of land ownership really bad. I have to drive to our farm in Alabama to experience the freedoms that I'm missing here (And that is not very often done). Susie

Adding Grape Leaves to Pickle Jars - to make them Crisp?

Didn't do a darned thing for me! I persuaded one of our many local wineries to give me some fresh grape leaves, drove out of my way to pick them up and still had soft pickles. Phtooie! Chase's Dills, posted here, crisp every time!!! Here's the recipe, the water vinegar ratio should be adjusted to a 50/50 ratio to meet current guidelines. I make mine as written, but will NOT recommend that as safe! My risk factor alone. Chase's Dills ============= You can usually count on between 6-8 dills (cukes) per 1 quart jar, depending on size. Use 3" to 4" cukes that have just been picked. Place the cukes in ice cold water (I use my bath tub!!) and add a bag or two of ice to the water. The cukes should stay in the ice water for a minimum of 2 hours but no more than 8. Refresh the ice as required. I make the brine in great big batches using this ratio: 2 cups white vinegar 6 cups water 1/3 cup coarse pickling salt For each jar of dills you will need 2 nice size garlic cloves peeled and cut in half (4 pieces) and two dill heads. Leave the cukes whole. I sterilize my jars using the sani cycle of the dishwasher (you could boil the jars instead) When they are really hot, almost at the end of the cycle I place them in a oven at 150 degrees to keep them good and hot. Make the brine and bring the brine to a full and rolling boil. Place the rings and lids in a large saucepan with water and bring them almost to the boil. Then turn down but keep them hot. Place the cukes, garlic and dill in the hot jars. I do garlic, dill, cukes, garlic, dill. Pour brine over the cukes. Only do 2 jars at a time, leave the rest in the oven to keep them hot. Wipe the rim really well, this is critical to sealing, and place lid and ring on and screw to finger tight. Let sit 6-8 weeks before eating! And, yes, I know the vinegar/water ratio isn't "approved". Pickling Hot Peppers - Brine Level in Jars

The secret is packing them hot. Multiple slits, then lightly blanch (or roast to peel), then pack and cover with the brine. When packed raw they will always soak up much of the brine in the jar during the processing. My personal method is to cut slits, drop raw peppers by the handful into the already boiling brine mix to blanch, stir vigorously so they suck up some brine (you'll see air bubbles as the brine gets in) and leave them for about 30 seconds then scoop them hot into the jar. That way they already have brine in them and when you top off the jars with the brine you will end up with full jars after 10 mins. processing. Also be sure you get all the air out of the jars before putting on lids. You might want to note that the NCHFP instructions also call for a 5:1 vinegar to brine ratio. 2:1 would still be safe but more vinegar gives you a longer shelf life. Dave PS: I don't use honey (although it does sound good and will give it a try) but in addition to the salt I also add 1/4 tsp. pickle crisp to each pint for firmness.

Don't what you mean by the old Heinz recipe as there are many attributed to them (some fine, some very unsafe) so use care. Keep in mind that a minimum of 50% vinegar brine is required and more vinegar is better. Many of us also recommend using Pickle Crisp as it helps keep the sliced picles more crisp. Next to the milk can for sure! It gets lost in the bottle tree, and it adds some sparkle to the milk can area. Maybe do a little glass mushroom for under the bottle tree?
Those birds make a great topper. Nice job!

Great job recycling! I like it better next to the milk can. It just stands out more there. You need to show that pretty totem off to it's best advantage!

I agree with the others. It shines its best beside the milk can. The bottle tree lets it blend in too much.

What can I say? I'm a loner! lol! I like it better with the bottle tree. It fits in better with the theme and matches the colors of the bottles. IMHO, it looks too fancy to be next to the more rustic milk can. But it looks great no matter where it is. Love the little birdies!

Bright199 That globe is a solar light. I have some all over my gardens and they work. At night they look like hugh fireflies!

Hmmmmm, OK.... I'm a fencerider on this one!!!
But, I love it anyway! The little birds are just the icing on the cake, ver pretty! And I like your bottle tree, too!!

I really like those colors on that totem but it definiteley looks best by the rusty old milk can what fantastic contrast.great Vignette!

A pickle jar totem- now that's unique. The materials are right there in your own kitchen, would have been thrown away otherwise and look what you did with them and a little imagination. I love it.
Hard to see the details but whatever is inside them and the little glass balls around the rims are cool, really adds interest.
I like the way it looks by the bottle tree the best, with all the other colored glass.

I love it but just one caveat....because it is glass place somewhere it cannot be knocked over. If it breaks you will be picking glass shards out of the soil for years.
