Resale Mosaic Jar for Totem

Found a TOP PIECE for a Totem at a resale for $4.25. The photo doesn't seem to pick up the mirrored (opalescent) pieces of mosaic. The jar is pale green glass. The sea shells are a really nice touch.

Very beautiful and unusual piece, susie!! I love the knob on top and the seashells. And its my fav color, too! but I am sure coveting that blue house across the street! Wouldn't do us to live that close, we could tear up some crafting now, couldn't we??!! LOL!!

Hearing you all makes me JEALOUS!! I can go into a charity shop weeks later and see NOTHING NEW!! One CS by me selects which plates it puts out and usually dumps the ones they don't put out and won't let anyone even see them! That's why I feel very blessed to have a friend who works in a different cs who saves all the stuff they'd toss for me to look through. And colorful plates often sell for $3 here - most plates are plain or poorly designed for cutting into mosaics. And there are a lot of plates with brown and mustard colored designs - YUCK! So if I see something colorful I snatch it us so quickly... makes Clark Kent changing into Superman look like a snail! Once I picked up some plates at a cs and the lady said they were so pretty and I must have made a guilty face cuz right away she said, "You're not going to smash them up, are you?" I said I was and she said she had another mosaicer come in often to look for plates for smashing. So I have stiff competition here. No wonder I have a difficult time finding breaking material! HA Actually, when I found that complete service for 12, the Sunflower plates I'm using on my mosaic bench, for just $10, I was overjoyed!! Full patterned plates like that are a very rare find. When I told the ex-owner I was going to break them up she looked heartbroken but I wasn't feeling bad at all. I told her I would make something beautiful with them and I do love the bench. It was because of those plates I came up with the design with the peacocks. Remember, you're repurposing, not destroying. You're taking something that was once used for one reason and creating BEAUTY!! We can't have enough beauty in this world of ours!

I have been a member here for about 5 years, and in that time I have posted maybe half a dozen times. I am almost a daily visitor. The creativity and the amazing amount of work here just blows me away. While I will admit that everyone's taste is not the same, that is the appeal to me. I can do what I can do, and I can see what I can see. I come to see what other people do and what other people see. I have some things in my garden that most folks might not find beautiful. I have a rose planted in a rusty old blue canner on my back porch, and I have a geranium planted in a chamber pot. (I also have a cement chicken, but that's a differnt story) I love all your things. If I want to steal your ideas (and I have: tipsy pots, ladders, et al) I do. If not, I simply look and enjoy, and do not critique what you have worked so hard to make, and get so much enjoyment from. Thank you for so many years of wonderful enjoyment.

Thanks for all the compliments! Here I wasn't sure if purplemoon would covet the bunny or the gnomes. he-he Although knowing her, she might have those gnomes too. Actually I got the gnomes last year at the end of summer and was using them to pose on the top of the vase so you could see what the top looks like. Walgreens always carries some adorable gnomes and little figurines that are usually 2 for $5. The Restore (Habitat for Humanity resale stores) are great for buying tiles and grout for mosaicing, hardware for decorating birdhouses and the like, old sinks for water features, wooden shutters, glass ceiling light shades for mushrooms (or garden ladies' hats), old windows, balustrades, paint brushes ... and that's just the stuff I can think of off the top of my head. Ours also has old furniture and cabinets. I have looked longingly and some old cabinets and bathroom sinks thinking they would make a great potting bench. The only thing they price ridiculously there are their lamps. I saw a blue lamp that would have made the perfect base for a gorgeous totem but they wanted $20 for it and then it would have been 1/2 off but $10 is still too much for something like that. nonacook, I know what you mean about the dollar store things. I often see little figurines that look like dollar store finds at the locat thrifts and they want 99 cents or more for them. Our GW can be high too. You have to watch for sales. Our local GWs have a discount card you can get for free. They send you notices of sales or discounts you can get with your card. I have to get to GW before the end of the month to use my 25% off birthday card they sent me. My favorite second hand stores? The junky ones in old stores with low overhead and no frilly display racks and shelves. But I agree, rummage sales can be the best buys. Just takes a lot of lookin'!

LOL...I LOVE this site. You all are so supportive and helpful...I can sit here alone and work, but know that if I have "trouble" or want guidance there are friends out there to direct me. I am working on three windchimes from glass, another totem and after seeing the 25' snake on someone's site (sorry I forgot the name) I want to put a twisted snake on my terra cotta chiminea. Ideas, ideas, this place seems to give birth to them. Once again, thanks everyone. Pictures to follow, maybe tomorrow. :)

YA'LL COME ON DOWN!!!!! We could fight the H.O.A. together. A lot of people could never stand the "MR. ROGERS" feel to this neighborhood.

When we work on projects in the front of the house, we are always greeted from all strolling, biking, or jogging neighbors. Some offer to help but that's just being "sweet". I'm sure they dont really want to trade that "Sweet" for Sweat".

I just wouldn't know how to act with houses that close to me. You sure can't pull up a flatbed and have all your musician buddies come over for a two day party :D LOL
on the downside,living in the country, it's a long drive to civilization *blush*

You are so right Kudzu!!!! We moved here to avoid land maintainance work (I had just had back surgery). We have alleyways behind each row of houses too. We get waves and Howdy's from the back neighbors everytime we are back there. We hear their BBQ's and they hear our skill saw. LOL The builders compensated by building a large number of parks, lakes, pavillions, community club centers, trails, 2 dog parks, Outdoor BBQ Kitchen, two concrete water parks, exercise gym, dance studio ect. That was supposed to keep people's live music in the parks. And we indeed have several live concerts each year. It is a cool concept but in the summer I have to hear everyone,s lawnmower, weedeater, radio in the garage, car doors ect...

The good noise that I do not mind is that I can stand on my porch and hear a local farms donkey throwing a fit. That always makes me and Hubs smile. We also keep watch on the horses and cattle all around as we drive the perimeter of the neighborhood.

One day during a drought a local crop field burned (sparks from a 4-wheeler) and we could hear coyotes howling that night. They ate one of our swans at the entrance pond.

We are a small town That was designed and built all at once out in the middle of the country.

I do not get to take a walk and cut branches or vines to use in crafts. : ( I dont get to bring rocks home from the lake or pick the flowers. Even our Bass are "catch and release"!!! So I miss that aspect of land ownership really bad.

I have to drive to our farm in Alabama to experience the freedoms that I'm missing here (And that is not very often done).
