First Totem

I just did my first totem after spending two days shopping at the thrift stores for 'stuff'. I have several under construction, but this one is now installed in my garden. I am pretty excited...got my neighbor interested and now she is making a couple. Yaaahhoo.

Your first one is very nice !! I bet it looks great sparking in your garden. So - is the next one done yet ?? Huh? Huh ? I'm anxious to see !! ( LOL )

Good work!The blue totem is awesome. Isn't this the best site ever? I haven't been here very long either,and you are already better at the pics than me. Unfortunatly she took it all home with her. She closes on her house Thursday. Packed it all in her van. I used glass drill bits on the plates. One at a time. I don't have a drill press. Make sure to use water with the drilling. Let the bit work so don't press to hard. Glass takes alot longer than the ceramic plates. Hope that helps.

Oh, Kathy, I'm sorry to hear about Teeger, it's so hard to lose them. Very nice memorial totem. One of my totems has that same top. Even tho all of ours are buried in different places I'm thinking a Kitty memorial garden might be an idea I'll pursue.

Thank you all for the encouragement. My DH moved me off the lanai and into the spare bedroom so I wouldn't pass out from this wicked heat. Now I can spend more time...yes. leveta..the bottom pieces are a small candy dish and a large faceted vase for the pipe. toomuch...you are right, I keep wanting to get in the car and go to another gs or ts. ...and I have two boxes FULL of "materials"...Ah well, I am hooked. Marlene..thanks for your comment about the shape...I particularily fell in love with the little finial (it had blue spots which I painted gold to go with the color...have no idea if it will last...but wanted to get it out right away.)

I'm working on my first one, too, & now have 3 "components", but not yet a finished one.

Welcome, gardencrone! Yup, hook, line & sinker...you're hooked! I don't have alot of experience with glass & totems but you may want to ask about "curing" time for the Silicone II ...& mosaics...would hate to see your "pretties" fall apart! Good work! TFS! Jeanne S.

What a great job! Love the yellow and mirror pieces you used to mosaic. I think it will really help it stand out in the garden. This reminds me of a staff that kings and queens walk around with that are usually encrusted with jewels. Great finial choice for the top of it too! I can't wait to see your follow up pieces.

LOL...I LOVE this site. You all are so supportive and helpful...I can sit here alone and work, but know that if I have "trouble" or want guidance there are friends out there to direct me. I am working on three windchimes from glass, another totem and after seeing the 25' snake on someone's site (sorry I forgot the name) I want to put a twisted snake on my terra cotta chiminea. Ideas, ideas, this place seems to give birth to them. Once again, thanks everyone. Pictures to follow, maybe tomorrow. :)

Hmmmmmm....a twisted snake??? Please elaborate! I'd love to see what you're talking about. I have junk spiders, butterflies, dragonflies, mosquitos, frogs and chickens in my gardens, but no snakes......

Marlene. This is the snake. She put it on a wall in her home in Mexico. Her name is Barbara but her screen name is flagtruck and this was posted on 7-27-08 on mosaics and stained glass. REally awe inspiring.
